How much does your Green Waste Collection cost?

Horsham district council. Large wheelie bin £42 per year; collected fortnightly . Goggle search says 65% of councils charge for collections.

Apart from refuse and recycling ,which my local council deal with, I take responsibility for my own green waste.

It never occurred to me that this varied so much .. It seems very unfair that some should pay so much and others nothing at all dependent on wherever you live. All part of the postcode lottery I suppose but it would be better if replies included the area concerned. So much rubbish is foisted off on us in the form of superfluous packaging, and trees and hedges are very often inherited along with their upkeep so not always a matter of choice. I always felt part of taxes were supposed to pay for this but for the last two years we here in Hambleton have been charged £40 a year to have a green bin emptied fortnightly.

It is collected for 9 months of the year. If you want it collected throughout the year you pay an extra charge, I think+ it is £35. There is no food waste collection. They wanted to start charging for green waste and many people couldn't afford that and as the only waste disposal centre in our area is a 40 minute drive away right where most of the councillors and MPs live we made our anger known and they backed down. I reckon it is a battle we might have to repeat. Sounds as though we are quite fortunate. Mind you you need to save money for when yiu have to have replacement springs fitted to your car when it huts one of the enormous potholes in the road.x

I'm amazed at the huge variation across Councils and even within counties - I seem to be paying less for green waste collection (£50 pa fortnightly all year round) than other parts of Norfolk but we have no food waste collection here. I compost a lot and the Council has been offering cut price Bokashi bins (2 for £15) for composting cooked food/meat scraps that shouldn't really go in ordinary composters, so I took advantage of that. Unfortunately, once I'd used the included pack of Bokashi bran, it was impossible to find any local suppliers and it costs a fortune to buy online and have delivered. So, it's not a very "green" option. When we moved to this area, we found that the wheelie bins (for general waste and recycling) were far bigger than we needed so asked for them to be replaced with the smaller ones that are usually given to single occupant households. The Council's response was that we would have to pay £16 each for the replacement bins. After a very firm letter from me, pointing out that we were actually helping them by generating less waste, the bins arrived and the charge was dropped! Has anyone noticed a little indentation under the lid of their wheelie bins? I was told that was so that a "chip" could be inserted if, in future, the council decides to make us pay according to the weight of refuse in our bins ..... but this maybe an urban myth!

No, here in Stockport, ( Greater Manchester) the Lib Dems took control of the council at the last local elections after six years of Labour rule. They increased their number of seats at the expense of the Conservatives.

Not only do we not pay an additional fee for our garden and food waste, it is collected every week.

Birmingham does charge for green waste collection, I have no idea how much but for the amount I have I'd probably only fill the wheelie once, possibly twice in the whole year, so definitely not worth doing for me.

My green waste goes into the compost bin in my garden for free.

We have a black bin for landfill, a green bin for recycling all included in our council tax. We pay £50 a year for a brown garden waste bin for the stuff we can't compost. Black and green collected fortnightly and brown on the alternate fortnight.

We are charged £21 for a 240 litre green wheelie bin and £32 annual service charge. If you get income support, pension credits, housing or council tax benefits it's £10 for a bin and £18 annual service charge. You get a £3 discount off the annual service charge for paying by Direct Debit. Collections are fortnightly.

I pay £60 a year fortnightly collection all year. No discount for pensioners. Garden waste only no food waste collection here at all. Separate Wheelie bin.

Our council charge £30 per annum. We are provided with a wheelie bin which as collected every fortnight, even through winter. We are West Lancashire.

We have to buy the bin ,about £50 and then pay about £60 pa for a fortnightly collection. We also have almost the highest council tax.

I have two green wheelie bins. No charge (above council tax) and fortnightly collections except Dec/Jan/Feb which are monthly.

We have a fortnightly green waste collection and it is covered by our council tax. We have a wheely bin for it. We also have a wheely bin for recycling and one for non-recyclable waste. These are both collected weekly. We used to have a separate food waste bin but this stopped for a long time. It has recently been reintroduced though.
