Fed up of all the doom and gloom, I’ve picked myself a bunch of flowers from the garden - between phase 1 and phase 2 of the summer, so my last rose of the main season, and my first dahlias. Cheer us all up and show us your pickings today!

It partly depends where you live Shinamae - north / south, by the coast / inland, if the garden is sheltered, and what sort of a ‘look’ you prefer (formal / cottage garden, etc.) and whether you want to grow from seed or buy plants. Have a look in nearby gardens as to what is doing well. Our local small independent garden centre is very helpful.

Thank you for your reply, I am in North Devon and I’m posting a picture of what my garden is like at the moment. The tiles need re-grouting and cleaning!!

I am keeping an eye on my daughter’s garden whilst she is away and I picked some runner beans which we have just eaten.

Vintagenonna Fri 29-Jul-22 19:11:50

Three lovely ripe figs.

Can't post a picture as they got eaten rather quickly.

What beautiful gardens, I agree
Mine suits me but some things grow better than others
Here is a vase of roses, sweet william and honeysuckle - a bit droopy now.

So many beautiful pictures and beautiful gardens. Absolutely lovely to see.

Sadly my garden is a desert after a few years of hardly any rain, no flowers to be seen since about April and even then very sparse ? A guest who has been with us for the last eight months is a bit bewildered at how brown and droopy everything is in a country known for it's green fields and rain.

This is a lovely thread, thanks for all your photos, especially those of the veg and fruit. I like all my house plants, but would love to have some outdoor growing space.

You have a very inviting patio Aldom and the flowers are vibrant. You must have green fingers. ?

Seeing this thread has made me want to grow some flowers outside in pots, I have a few plants but no flowers so as I am completely ignorant on this subject could you please recommend some flowers that I could start growing?..??????

I have an area by my fruit and veg beds where I grow flowers to cut. The house has been full of the scent from the sweet peas for nearly a month now. Love my glads with the sun behind them. These were picked two days ago.

Yesterday I picked sugar snap peas and purple sprouting broccoli.

I can’t pick my garden flowers unless they’ve fallen over or need rescuing. I buy flowers occasionally.

Baggytrazzas Fri 29-Jul-22 08:58:13

I think I will see if I can plant some for cutting from next year. I agree these would be cheery to have in the house.

Aldom Fri 29-Jul-22 08:34:29

I still have lots of flowers to enjoy in the garden in spite of picking a small vase full to bring me a smile indoors.

TillyTrotter Fri 29-Jul-22 07:12:57

I don’t need to pick these as they are in a pot for me to enjoy at my front door.
Lovely thread - beautiful flowers all.

Part of the pleasure firy me in having a garden is picking the flowers to enjoy inside.

I grow mainly perennials too Chewbacca. I’ve divided over the years, so I’ve got patches of the same thing repeated. In my bunch there are Shasta daisies, alchemilla mollis, verbena, achillea and scabious, all of which keep flowering for longer if you cut them. I deadhead as well and they all flower for ages. I’m really pleased with the dahlias, I got a job lot of mixed colours for £20 at JParker’s a couple of years ago, they have grown on and this year I’ve got loads coming so I’ve decided to cut some and enjoy them in the house too - flowers never fail to cheer me up, every time I walk past the table they make me smile.

I don't pick the flowers in my garden unless they've snapped or been blown over, only then do I cut them and bring them in. I plant mainly herbaceous and perennial flowers and just think that they look nicer out in the garden, where I can still see them. And as Callistemon says, they last a lot longer!

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Jul-22 23:21:41

Peonies

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Jul-22 23:21:01

Oh, no pictures!

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Jul-22 23:20:09

The poppy is a stray but has finished flowering now as have the peonies.

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Jul-22 23:17:31

Grammaretto

Why don't you pick garden flowers? I grow deliberately so that I always have something to put in a vase.
Here's my DGD helping me to pick beans.

If we'd grown sweet peas this year then I would have picked them.

The rest of the garden flowers/shrubs aren't really suitable for picking. They last longer in the garden too.

Chewbacca -that blackcurrant jam looks tasty!

all of these photos are wonderful its lovely to see them.

Ali23 Thu 28-Jul-22 21:48:04

What a lovely thread. I’ve really enjoyed looking at all of the picked flowers, fruit and veg. I did pick some Shasta daisies a couple of weeks ago, but they’ve gone over now. I need to pick and freeze some more blackberries. Scrumptious!
