My lovely magnolia is sprouting gigantic buds. Much too early (I think!?)

There are always botanical oddities, every year. I usually assume it's something to do with the micro-conditions of their environment that can be subject to changes we don't notice, such as some fungal 'help' below ground, for example.

Saw my first snowdrops in someone's front garden while out for a walk today - been really heavy rain here and strong winds so they cheered my up.

Ha! Not a problem actually. It's normal for flowers to sprout earlier than expected. They always come out due to being exposed to the right conditions - the soil temp, sunlight and moisture level. Plants can't differentiate the seasons; they don't know about winter or summer, etc. They simply react to the kind of conditions they're exposed to. It's kind of a good thing so I agree with @Rosepaul that you make the most of it.

I learned about this a few years back when my Christmas cacti bloomed earlier than expected, several weeks actually. Which got me so worried. But after checking out with fellow gardeners here I realized it was okay, so I waited until spring and yep, I wasn't wrong. The purple flowers kept on, although they also died off earlier than usual. So, yeah, just cherish them.

I’ve seen a few daffodils out already.

Our camellia was trying to bloom, two bids had opened, the rest well on their way. It’s currently covered with horticultural fleece to protect it against frost. The magnolia has huge buds, hopefully more sensible and will wait to open.

I don't think it's just plants that are confused, either - on a very frosty day last week, I came across swarms of little insects as I made my way along the side of a field!

I have had primroses in bloos since November.
