These buds aren't developing, but falling off.
There are no insects eating it.
Does anyone think it could be a lack of water?
We have had quite a bit of rain though.

I think Wisteria is a bit like Camellia, they need water in the summer and Autumn to make the buds for the following year.
Or it could be the cold nights.

Thanks J52, I was wondering if watering it now might help. But if it's the cold nights then there is nothing to be done.

It does sound like it might be frost is the cause what a shame, maybe some will survive fingers crossed.

Yes tanith 🤞
I'll post a photo showing how things turn out later on in the season

Mines small and in a pot but it flowers sparsely every year over a gate and trellis.

The buds on my wisteria fall off very easily when touched.

I forgot to prune it this year so have loads of whippy growth with lots of buds. It have since cut some branches back but it's a bit late really.

I think it is probably better if you do prune it (as advised) and having fewer buds means they are more robust

Lack of water last year might have affected the development of the buds .

Don't worry :

I prune mine in February .
You can also prune at the end of the summer .

Give your wisteria a rose tonic and a feeding of blood , fish and bone .

Potted wisteria benefit from Tomatorite or similar according to the RHS , but I've always used rose tonic plus blood , fish and bone .

Try not to allow the soil to dry out if we have another scorching summer .

I throw old tea bags around the base of shrubs .
