It’s a neglected bush that I was going to dispose of until I noticed this flower. If I cut it back will it survive?

Is it a rhododendron of some sort?

Looks like a very poorly rhododendron.

The flower and leaves look a bit like a pieris to me.

The leaves also look a bit like choisya, mock orange. There are different leaf colours depending on the variety. If it is choisya, the flowers will be scented.

Yes pink cosmos that’s it! Will it regrow if I cut it back?

PinkCosmos Thu 11-May-23 13:42:46

I'm not sure. I imagine it would be OK. Maybe check it out on the tinterweb.

Maybe it is in the wrong location. I think they like it quite shady.

Choiysa

It looks like a pieris species - Lily of the Valley bush

It doesn’t look healthy at all and may have been infested with lace bugs.

The flowers don’t look like Choysia so I agree it’s Pieris japonica which has flowers that resemble lily of the valley.

The leaves should darken as the season moves on but as it’s an acid lover you could give it a liquid feed of sequestrene which will give it an iron boost.

Pieris is an acid lover and really needs to be in ericaceous soil to thrive.

My immediate thought was choisya.
Some varieties are golden-leaved.

However, the flower looks like a rhododendron - it will be fine if you feed it with rhodedendron/camellia/azalea feed and give it a top dressing of ericaceous compost.

A pieris flower is different and the leaves should be pink tipped at this time of year.

Don't cut it back at the moment, give it a meal, it's hungry!

Callistemon21 Thu 11-May-23 15:00:06

Here's my pieris at the moment, which might need some TLC as it's in a pot, it's finished flowering and the flowers were white and pendulous.

Callistemon21 Thu 11-May-23 15:06:25

Rhododendron - needs a feed! The pink flowers are another shrub.
Choisya - golden I think

Juliet27 Thu 11-May-23 15:34:06

Thanks Callistemon, you and pink cosmos are right that it’s pieris and I do remember now how the poor thing looked before I neglected it. I’ll sort out feed.

Callistemon21 Thu 11-May-23 16:05:48

Pinkcosmos got it correct, I thought it was a rhododendron!

Pieris like the same conditions as rhododendrons, azaleas etc.

Mine looked very sad in the garden bed but they're better since being moved to large pots. I'm not sure what to do if they outgrow them, they're getting very large.
I do feed them and top with ericaceous compost (when I remember).

If you remember it having bright red leaves in spring , Pink Cosmos and Calli have got it right - Pieris Forest Flame.

Ours is 15ft and in striking full bloom now.

Picture This is a great app for identifying plants, just take a pic and it tells you what it is and how to care for it. The paid version will state what is wrong with it and what to do.
