Inherited roses - what do they need please?

I just want to say thanks again for advice given yesterday. My roses are now in the centre border - still in full sun but that sounds as though it will be fine. They have been cut right back so I don't expect they'll flower this year but am hopeful for next! I removed two large clumps of Cranesbill to accommodate them and plan to put two Fuschia plants into the spare pots. I'm enjoying this gardening lark this year!

Remove from pots. Sun is good for roses, water well, bone meal.

Thank you all! I garden on clay too. I am going to get my husband to plant them in the border and will cut them down as advised. Are they unlikely to flower this year? They were given to me in the pots last year and seemed healthy then. I know they were expensive but my neice had chopped bits of here and there. They stand on a south facing patio and in full sun most of the day.

When? Are they facing the same direction and getting the same shelter eg from wind?

I have some roses in very large self-watering pots and I have 30+ roses in the ground

Your roses are weak and their leaves are thin and a feast for aphids

You need a bigger pot and to cut the rose right down to about a couple of inches above the scion (grafted join). Roses are very tough and it will soon throw up new and healthier shoots. Use mycorrhizal fungi around the roots

It is far easier to put the rose into the ground, plus the m fungi. Still cut it right down and that will give the roots a chance to establish and be strong, which will make the rose stems and leaves strong

They will be much better in the border. You will have to water from time to time if we have a drought and/or until the plant looks established. No need to water too much, nor give fertilizer at this stage as you don`t want overly lush growth this year

I think roses are always happier out of their pots. They often have a long tap root which needs the depth of soil. I have several plants, and the only potted one looks unhappy, with black spot. The others are healthy and it looks like being a bumper year for blooms. They are also one of the few plants which like my clay soil.
