Bind Weed

I have a little hand squirter filled with glyphosate and zap it whenever I see a plant, that kills the roots as well. Best of luck digging all the roots out.

Thank Hetty58 that sounds like a good idea, I’ll have to get someone to help me though, as if I have to be on my knees all along a 50’ hedge, I’ll never get up again 😂

It took many years to dig it all out at our last place. If it's just under the hedge, though, perhaps you can cover it with weed control fabric, then a layer of mulch. Kill any that escapes from the edges, though.

I’m going to have to go with zero tolerance as advised by some of you.
I liked the bottle idea Nandalot but the roots are right under the hedge and hard to get to, I’ve just read you can do something similar by covering the leaves with a clear plastic bag.
So you’ve answered my question, I can’t be lazy and just leave them.

The problem is that you only have to leave the tiniest bit of root in the ground and you may as well not bother. I have it coming through a perennial fuschia in my front garden and it’s impossible to dig the crafty blighter out! The plastic bottle thing sounds like a good idea, Nandalot!

We used to live in a very old house with rudimentary foundations and thick stone walls, and would regularly get bindweed growing in our cloakroom! It came up through a tiny crack in the concrete floor and was very persistent

I have a small amount that comes under the hedge from next door. I pull it up, taking as much root as possible. It does weaken it although I’ll never get rid of it.

Bind weed swamps plants and kills them. The flowers will seed and you will have even more plants apart from those which will grow from the roots which cross cross and spread everywhere. M0nica’s advice is good, as usual. Have zero tolerance. You can let it grow up a cane and then spray it with weed killer.

I am waging war on some bindweed and other perennial weeds including brambles in a small patch of garden. For about three years I have been alternating wallflowers and annuals so that the bed gets a good clear out and hopefully shall be able to plant perennials next year.
The only weeds really remaining are about six bindweed roots so this is my main focus this year. I have tied each bindweed to a small stake and allowed it to grow a bit. I then place a plastic bottle over the stake, bottom and top cut off, and spray with systemic weed killer. Have done this a few times and they are beginning to give up. The bottle is to protect the other plants.

Hands and knees, hand fork and dig it up roots and all, put in a bucket and DO NOT put it on the compost heap, or even garden waste brown bin. Put it in the black bin or, dare I say it food watse, anywhere that means no fragment of the white root survives.

Do this for about 10 years and you will eventually get rid of it.

Just got back from a break away my veg patch has been overtaken by it. As pretty as it is I will need to pull as much as possible out.

I like bindweed too - but do pull it out from tidy areas! 🙄
