I was given this rose two years ago for Mothers Day.
Its in a pot, Iv topped dressed it and looked after it but this year all the leaves seem to be at the top. Its had one bloom so far but i cant see anymore,
What am i doing wrong?

Have you pruned it?

Jaxjacky Mon 13-May-24 15:52:18

Has it been re potted since you got it?

Roses are very hungry.
The soil could have got too compacted, the hole in the bottom of the pot clogged up, it might have needed pruning in March ......

Does it need to be repotted with some well-rotted manure? Or planted out in a bed? At least regular feeding with liquid roe feed or Tomorite.

It's a lovely rose.

I saw someone on TV planting a rose bush in the ground with a ripe banana underneath the roots for feed!

Yes i have pruned it but have to confess iv no real idea if im doing it right,

I’ve just looked it up. Apparently it grows to 4ft so as it grows it’s very likely to have ‘bare legs’. It’s not a small plant. It needs a really big pot or to be in the ground, pruned late winter each year to prevent all the new growth being at the top and I would suggest some under planting to disguise bare lower stems.

Iv got a big jar iv been collecting banana skins in with water,, I could try some of the water as a feed do you think?

If you’re not sure how to prune, there are lots of videos on the internet. Too late for this year, but essential next. I suspect you may have pruned it too lightly, and that it needs repotting and feeding.

I think it might need more than that just now.

I'd repot with some new compost and added manure. You can buy it from a garden centre, no need to go to the stables (and it doesn't smell as bad). 🙂

Just measure it and its almost 4ft now.
We'v decided to replant it into a flower bed and put some bananas in the planting hole,
Thanks everyone for your advice.x

Yes will get some manure tomorrow,

Some mycorrhizal fungi (from the garden centre) would also be useful - sprinkle on the roots when planting - and some rose food from the garden centre too, and water well. I think it will be much happier in the border but don’t expect miracles this year - if it’s grown so much in two years it will be pretty exhausted! Good luck.

I've grown and propagated many roses and I find Mum in a Million temperamental .
It can produce lovely perfumed pink blooms .
Originally grown in Denmark with a less attractive name - I wish that I'd thought of the change !
It's name makes it a best seller and it's widely produced .
When you buy it fresh from a shop - it's probably been brought on to look good .
My neighbour was in tears over her Mum in a Million , which died .
We went to the plant nursery and I thought that most of them were not worth buying .
We settled on the best one and have nursemaided it ever since .
We've cut back trees and shrubs so that no water drips on it .
We replaced all the top soil .
We've experimented with feeds .
And settled on my old standby Vitax Q 4 .
It's produced three flowers after two years and is very leggy .
It needs underplanting .
At the moment , it's Forget Me Nots .

I recall the day that my mother bought an Ena Harkness from Woolworths for three and six .
I used to count 40 blooms in the summer .
They were exquisite, well formed and fragrant .
We pruned it yearly and it had a well rotted horse manure as a tonic.
Our house was full of cut blooms .

These days , I rate most the roses hybridised by David Austin roses highly .

I'm not necessarily the banana treatment, it's just that I saw it on TV today and I'd never heard of it before.
