I've grown and propagated many roses and I find Mum in a Million temperamental .
It can produce lovely perfumed pink blooms .
Originally grown in Denmark with a less attractive name - I wish that I'd thought of the change !
It's name makes it a best seller and it's widely produced .
When you buy it fresh from a shop - it's probably been brought on to look good .
My neighbour was in tears over her Mum in a Million , which died .
We went to the plant nursery and I thought that most of them were not worth buying .
We settled on the best one and have nursemaided it ever since .
We've cut back trees and shrubs so that no water drips on it .
We replaced all the top soil .
We've experimented with feeds .
And settled on my old standby Vitax Q 4 .
It's produced three flowers after two years and is very leggy .
It needs underplanting .
At the moment , it's Forget Me Nots .
I recall the day that my mother bought an Ena Harkness from Woolworths for three and six .
I used to count 40 blooms in the summer .
They were exquisite, well formed and fragrant .
We pruned it yearly and it had a well rotted horse manure as a tonic.
Our house was full of cut blooms .
These days , I rate most the roses hybridised by David Austin roses highly .
