And walking back from taking the dahlia photo I spotted this. Always nice when the cat appreciates the latest cushion purchased so I can sit on my bench after my hip op.

I have just remembered why I don't buy dahlias! Slugs have ignored everything else

My gran used to tell me to put chillie powder around plants but I’ve got lavender plants it seems to keep a lot off mine but if you don’t want them put lavender in water near your plants they don’t like the smell of it.

My hosta's got a hole in it. No matter what kind of pellets I buy, it's still full of them.

I planted a large round shallow pottery bowl with marigolds - they looked lovely on the garden table. The next morning all that remained were the stalks. The creeping little devils seem to be able to climb anywhere, and ignore all repellants except throwing them over next door (who don't have any plants, just grass)

I have a lovely hosta in a pot and the pot has a copper band around it and the hosta has never been attacked! The pot is sitting on a short tree stump about a foot off the ground. Love hostas but this is the only one I've ever managed to keep intact.

Sheep's wool!? I wonder if my little dog's hair after clipping would work, I may try it. It's not so unsimilar to curly sheep's wool.

Nematodes eat the slugs from inside out, I hate the slugs, but couldn't do that to them.

Yes, I tried egg shells & salt, didn't work. Underneath my bird bath I have a small ground bird bath, the snails all lay in there at night, so easy for me to pick up, they also hide under a dear I have laying on the edge of my lawn, not far from the bird bath, so again easy to pick up.

The slugs come up through the kitchen & bathroom plug holes, so keep the plugs in.

As well as the summer bedding (all in pots) I also attempt to grow a lot of veg mostly in raised beds. It's a hobby so it definitely costs me more than I can buy stuff in the shop, but it costs even more when everything gets eaten - and so disappointing. The only veg that is safe is onions.

We've lived here for 42 years and seen a great decline in both slugs and snails yet we only seem to need a couple and they manage to decimate the lot. Even when we had a pond and frogs.

I've tried everything mentioned above but never vaseline, so that is on the list for next year. However, I have often resorted to slug pellets in desperation and found that just a very few in a pot or bed seems to put them off. I don't even find any dead ones.

I have nest of sparrows in my ivy hedge and usually about 20 sparrows chirping away in my bamboos.. I'd rather have birds and ignore the slugs, so I don't use any pellets that could harm them,, however I am going to try the vaseline for my ailing spinach and hope it really is perpetual..

You mustn't do that Madmeg, the birds eat the dead slugs and it kills them!

Vaseline? I'm reading backwards, so yet to get to that tip.

I had 2 Dailia completely eaten by slugs, Hosta & many more. This year I lifted my Hosta, put it in a pot and wrapped wire mesh round, it had been almost initially eaten, I felt sorry for it so wanted to rescue it instead of throwing it away, it looks like it has a couple of new leaves on it after 2 weeks, so fingers crossed.

I moved here 2.5yrs ago and there was not a single plant in the garden [bet the slugs had eaten them all!] I picked up hundreds of slugs every night, went out with a torch. This year just pick up a few, after the initial clean-up after winter. I spray the Hosta with a homemade Garlic solution. Seems to be working.

It's so sad to see all your hard work and lovely plants vanish overnight. So, after 2yrs of hard work, my garden is looking good

One evening I went out into the garden, with torch and found slugs had climbed up my bird feeder, the sort that is a metal pole with hooks to hang seed trays on, they'd also got onto the seed trays, happily munching away. Next morning I used copper tape halfway up the pole and "stole" some strips of sand-paper from the garage, and stuck them on the pole, success, no more slugs on the feeder. I find copper tape works but the sandpaper was an extra bonus.

When we moved in to our new home I planted about 10 hostas and 20 french marigolds.Came down the next morning and thought they had been stolen by someone! Didnt realise we had so many greedy snails and slugs.There was only stumps left!!

Toads. They love the slimy ba**** .We had toads in the garden, long after we got rid of a pond. Last year we did a lot of remodelling and the toad habitat was lost. Hence my lacy hosters! My SIL puts crushed egg shells round her plants, but I’ve never found it effective.

I bought what I considered an expensive clematis, compared to the cheap ones in my local supermarket.. argh!! slugs,, slugs and more slimy creature slugs... then I read about wool pellets, and I am inclined to be careful with my money, o.k mean! but I am so pleased I found wool pellets, I will keep on buying them,,slugs and I assume snails,, won`t venture on to them

Honestly, you’d think they’d be safe enough - outside on a tray, on the table in the sun in the day, inside on the kitchen window sill at night. But this morning, I found two of them decimated, and one blasted snail asleep on the side of one of the peat pots.

Zinnia seedlings, I’ve been nurturing them in the hope of some late summer colour in our titchy little garden.

I've found coffee grounds do help but one hosta is like lace, a right mess, some dahlias gone too and now some lovely miniature roses in a pot are totally destroyed, I've had them for years too.

Well salted water in a black bucket and in they go. Dead.

Me too. And when I come across any eggs I crush them as well. Still plagued with them though!!

I use sheep’s wool around my hostas nd other plants that snails and slugs attack. You can purchase it from garden centre and it really works.

I just sprinkle salt around the pots....
