Flowering evergreen shrub which can tolerate times of little rain in an alkaline soil in a sunny garden.

Choisya Ternata Sundance we have it in a sunny dry border and it grows like mad.

Yellow/green evergreen leaves with little white flowers. The leaves are scented.

Daphne odora aureomarginata is beautiful highly scented shrub and also does well in we,l draining soil.

We have lots of camellias. Pink , red and white . Some are quite large.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I love Camellias but they need an acid soil.
I've had a Choisya but it only lived 6 years
I checked the Daphne and it said part shade my garden is full sun,

The only flowering evergreen in my garden which has shown no signs of stress in the prolonged hot weather is Viburnum tinus.

It will grow taller than 6 feet if you let it though but is easy to prune and keep in check.

Escallonia is very pretty and tough .
I have some very successful hedges comprised of Japonica though they aren't evergreen .
Viburnum is very useful too .
You might be able to grow Camellias with a tonic added .

My Pyracanthas have survived the hot dry summer. They are evergreen, have cream flowers around May and are now covered in red berries and look very pretty.

There are some great suggestions here! I'd also recommend considering a viburnum or a hardy hydrangea; both can reach around six feet and offer lovely flowers. Just make sure to plant them in a spot that suits their soil and sunlight needs. Good luck with your garden!

Abelia 'Edward Goucher' is good value. Evergreen with long lasting pink flowers and arching stems. There are other types which may grow taller.
