My gardener and I...

We have a yearly tree and shrub trim and our garden is about three times the size of yours. We are enthusiastic gardeners and also have a pond and greenhouse along with numerous flower borders and a sizeable front garden. We are in our 70s and have tried to move but local housing stock isn’t great. We love it but not sure how long we can maintain it for.

I don't get much help. DH likes doing the lawns (but not strimming / edging). Next-door neighbour took pity on me & did the top of my big laurel hedge this year. I don't mind pruning, but planting shrubs or trees in this garden, think there used to be a small tennis court here, usually involves me hiring a kango hammer!

Wyllow3 think yourself lucky your garden isn’t bigger, 😄as Mum has a house with more garden than that at the front and then again at the back, full to bursting with plants shrubs and some ornamental trees.Lovely yes, but needs so much attention, a younger neighbour helps her out and so do I now and then but she can’t afford a regular gardener as here they are £45 or more per hour.
I’m looking to find her a 2 bed bungalow with a small garden but very little on the housing market for sale atm.

I used to get a gardener in to cut the hedges (one of which is arguably not my responsibility!) and the top lawn as I can’t get the mower up there, but as he built up his business, he wanted a monthly contract which I didn’t think was necessary so we parted company (amicably). I manage pretty well with the occasional help of family.

Yes the man who cut the grass for the former owner came round and I now have him continue.

Your garden has lots of potential Tanith. Just a thought, but have you considered widening the borders for more shrubs and flowers? Thats what we ended up doing eventually, and I must say, I’m pleased with the result.

Is there someone who could do that for you - I see you say you have no help, but perhaps a neighbour might know of someone reputable and reasonable in price.

Yes Tanith I agree. A blank canvas. I got ideas from the TV garden makeovers.

For example, with more dry summers I would have planned more areas with low watering and weeding maintenance. But if your garden is square ish or long and thin you need wiggly paths to widen and soften… and I admit the path is resin. Cracks in patios and paths are the work of the garden curse.
I’ve decided to accept limited dandelions. They are bright after all and the bees love them.

Yes, a younger woman comes about three times a year to prune, weed and mulch, MrJ cuts the grass.

Do we get help?

Yes, we have weekly help with mowing garden grass, mowing the yards outside the gardens, tree trimming (we don't use chain saws).

I enjoy weeding, planting, and tend to flowers, make paths tidy.

That’s lovely, Wyllow3! I think your garden has lots of interesting nooks and crannies, Tanith and will look lovely.

I have a chap who cuts the grass every now and then. I have to hassle him at times to come, though he is a nice enough man. The rest I do myself, though I’m thinking I might need someone to come in to plant some bigger items I’ve acquired. Much of my garden consists of plants from supermarkets and the likes of B&M. I also get things from National Trust for Scotland gardens because they tend to be more acclimatised to Scotland weather. Have fun, everyone! 🪴 🌹 🌺 🌻

No no help here your garden is stunning mine is bare I've not got to grips with this garden yet I miss my old house established garden so I cut the grass and am sorting out some shrubs to put in the very small border. Cleaning the mower in stages as its got very warm so a sit down every 10 mins. I hope you get help soon I envy your garden muchly.😃
