Remember the expression, heart throb?
Mine was Ed Byrne from 77 Sunset Strip and I also fancied Joe from Bonanza.
And don't get me started on Pat Boone! (Is he still alive?)

Kookie from 77 Sunset Strip, I was totally besotted. I've not seen him since he appeared in Grease in the 1970s when he was still a good looking man. Oh to have been one of his leading ladies.

At 12 years old it was Dirk Bogarde [little did I know], also Rowdy Yates from Rawhide when I was 15 years old. Montgomery Clift[ again little did I know],Adam Faith , the young Marlon Brando, and then British Pop music arrived and after that the Beatles and the Stones.

I saved up my pocket money for ages to go to see Adam Faith at our theatre. But on the night he was on there was thick thick fog and the buses stopped running so I couldn't go. Mum had to physically stop me because I said I was going to walk it and she yelled at me "Look outside - you can't even see the garden gate!!!"
I later asked the theatre for a refund and they refused, saying the weather wasnt their fault. Oh I was devastated.! Cruel world!

POGS I loved him too, but not as much as I loved Adam Faith.

Not for me, didn't like where he stuck his chewing gum. smile

Lonnie Donegan was another of my favourites although not exactly a heart throb. My dad used to annoy me by calling him Donny Lonegan!

I wonder how many of my grandaughters 'heart throbs' of the moment they will still remember when they are over 50?

The ones we all fondly remember had substance, were great actors or singers....today's celebrities are so manufactured and superficial.

Have had such fun reading through these posts..so many names , fondly remembered... smile

POGS: It was the start of a lasting longing smile. She was lovely - and funny too. I suppose she had to be - married to Mel Brooks.

Robert Wagner, as in Hart to Hart! I think he's still alive.

What a lovely wander down memory lane, meeting all those heart throbs along the way! Yes to Cliff (when too young to know better..!) Richard Chamberlain, preferred Gil Favor to Rowdy Yates, but kept that rather quiet as he was (shhh) an older man....and ooh yes, Richard Widmark (older man again)- had forgotten about him. And 60's pop singer Jess Conrad. He lived not far from me & with a friend I went to stand hopefully outside his house. Didn't see him but his boxer dog came over & made friends. Didn't wash my hands for hours after stroking that dog!

Funny you should mention Brando, because Edna O'Brien was talking about him in the ptogramme I saw about her on BBC4 last night. She said he was the most fascinating, interesting, charismatic man ever; I'd only ever thought of him as bieng rather old and podgy. She didn't have an affair with him; made him sleep on the couch, I think, but her eyes twinkled when she mentioned Robert Mitchum, who I think was the one who was mad, bad and dangerous to know.

annodomini Wed 10-Oct-12 14:29:56

I fancied Brando like mad when he played Mark Anthony in the film of Julius Caesar.

Laurence Harvey!

annodomini Tue 09-Oct-12 18:22:35

Dirk Bogarde (in Doctor in the House) before I knew there was such a thing as a gay man. Also Gary Cooper - those eyes!

crimson Tue 09-Oct-12 17:51:13

Tyrone Power!

There was another actor with the same sort of good looks as Gregory Peck and James Mason, but I can't remember his name. I think he was quite young when he died. Doing my head in trying to remember.

Lilygran Tue 09-Oct-12 17:41:10

Charlton Heston, Kirk Douglas..... Johnny Weissmuller. A theme of shirtlessness seems to be developing here.

Lilygran Tue 09-Oct-12 17:38:48

Most of the really beautiful actors were gay, Montgomery Clift, Rock Hudson. But I was smitten with Stewart Granger and James Mason. Anyone for Richard Widmark? Shows my age.

ElsieJoy Tue 09-Oct-12 16:51:59

Richard Chamberlain....until I discovered he was a homosexual

Hunt Sun 07-Oct-12 23:26:49

Leslie Howard in Gone with the wind and Janes Mason in The seventh veil. I even called our daughter Francesca after the character in The seventh veil.( don't tell her!)
