Kitty Only just seen your reply to my post! Yes, they need an actual copy of the DC, but as spyder says, they're easy to obtain and cost £12.00.

It's definitely worth doing, as you'll probably find out a lot about your DF. Mine told us hardly anything, so it's like a jigsaw puzzle trying to piece it all together.

Kitty. If you find you do need a death certificate they are easily obtained online from the GRO website. There is usually a link to this from sites such as Find my Past although I am sure you can acccess it directly too. Last time I ordered one I think it was around £9.

The members are knowledgeable and helpful.

I recently discovered that my Dad started in the Royal Artillery but ended up in the Royal Army Medical Corp. He never talked about his war service so we never knew that. As ever, if only I had asked more when he was still around.

I'm not sure if they are mainly WW1 as I found some others from that time but not DFIL's WW2 records on there.

Ancestry has military records, not looked at them myself so not sure if you would find all you want but might be worth looking. You can have 14 days free trial, they will ask for your card details but you can cancel just before the end of your free days so no payment made. Or carry on if you get hooked!

I found DFIL on that site, he was RAF but I could now send for the full record, thanks Squiffy.

Thanks squiffy. My brother thinks Dad flew Lancasters. I think he was a radio operator. We both think we know that he was stationed in Aden and Leicestershire.

kitty I’ve just done this! They’ll send you forms to fill in asking for information on which force he was with, rank and you’ll need a copy of his death certificate. It’s all quite straightforward and costs £30. It takes a few weeks for the record to come through - my DF’s was pages long!!
