Grandad looking to find toddler daygroups in DY3 area.

Hi all, I'm a Grandad and early in 2024, will be going part time from work. To help our Daughter out with childcare cost, I will be entertaining our little bundle of joy on Fridays. She will be about 18 months by then, and I am trying to find a group to attend on Fridays that will enable her to have some interaction with other toddlers, but not necessarily in a nursery environment. Any help would be appreciated.

your post fills a whole page on an iPad : why do you feel this is necessary?

Christian1x the child in question has grown up and moved away…

That sounds like a wonderful arrangement — she’s going to love her Fridays with Grandad!

If you’re looking for toddler-friendly groups that aren’t nurseries, you could explore:

1. Local “Stay and Play” sessions

Often run by children’s centres, community halls, or church groups.

You pay a small fee, turn up, and let toddlers play with toys while you join in (and chat with other carers).

2. Library rhyme time or story time

Most libraries run free or low-cost sessions for under-5s, with songs, rhymes, and short stories.

Great for socialising and building her language skills.

3. Soft play toddler mornings

Some indoor play centres have quieter sessions for under-3s, usually weekday mornings, where she can explore in a safe, padded environment.

4. Music or baby/toddler dance classes

Groups like Music Bugs, Jo Jingles, or Mini Melodies welcome children from a young age.

They’re interactive and fun, and you can join in too.

5. Park or buggy meet-ups

Some local Facebook or “Mums/Dads/Grandparents” WhatsApp groups arrange informal playdates at the park.

Easy to join, and often free.

Tip for finding them:

Check your local council’s “Family Information Service” page — they usually list all stay-and-play and activity groups by day.

Search Facebook for “[your town] toddler group” or “[your area] stay and play”.

Libraries, leisure centres, and community halls often have noticeboards with flyers.

Was he ever going to?

You know, the OP will not come back to this thread after some of the comments

Ridiculous hurtful paranoia

this is a public forum, anyone can read it. anyone.
there are lots of people out there. all sorts.
not all of them are like you, or come at things as you would.
please think around these issues.

I would be dismayed if people responded to my husband like this had he posted here.
There are lots of great grandads out there who love looking after little ones or who want to help their sons and daughters out. I know my own father would have loved this opportunity had we been living closer.
It's not only women you know.

Can your daughter not assist with your question? I imagine she would want to approve the activities her child will be taking part in. A very odd enquiry here.

Spot on!

Speak with your daughter first and foremost. It’s sweet that you are so excited and thinking about what those days will look like, but ultimately your daughter gets to decide.

As the OP hasn’t returned with any comments or a word of thanks for suggestions (mine included) I think we must consider the ‘innocence’ of the Post?
Sadly the pre-penultimate posts have possibly played into the OP’s hands.
Hopefully, I’m wrong, but …..

There is a franchise called "Messy Monkeys" which might be in your area. Mind it is what it says and you have to be prepared to bath and change the toddler at the end of a session.

I’m amazed and disquietened this comment was allowed

Not sure why you think it shouldn't be allowed? Messy play activities involve toddlers getting covered in paint, glue, slime, glitter etc. Best to have them in a vest or swimsuit and yes they do need washed after.

GSM, the ‘daughter’ would indeed decide activity!
Also, in 6 months, circumstances may change.
It is unusual for a ‘grandad’ to expect to be welcomed
to join a group of presumably young women with toddlers.

welbeck Mon 07-Aug-23 18:56:42

an astute observation, GSM.

When. I cared for my grandsons, I found a toddler group to attend together in a local church and a monkey music group that offered music sessions. The toddler group was cheap at 1.50 a session to cover their snack, the music group was a bit more costly but great fun. Good on you for looking OP

I think music groups and libraries are a good start. 👍

Why not ask at your local council office? They know about all local groups for babies and small children, as the groups and organisers have to be registered and screened. (That is both for the physical and emotional needs of the children playing there, and to make sure that those running the groups are aware of the potential dangers from adults.) The local authority can provide you with information.

There’s loads of stuff going on in Dudley. I grew up in DY5.
I agree it’s an odd thing /place to ask this.

Sago Sun 06-Aug-23 10:33:16

welbeck

i meant Sago's point; exact same thing i was thinking.
be careful.

Thank you!

I can understand how so many people get scammed through a willingness to be kind and helpful.

NotSpaghetti Sun 06-Aug-23 08:36:34

Hope you find something fun. Activities only last a short time but do break up the day if you have a toddler.

Redrobin51 Sat 05-Aug-23 20:13:37

There are rattle and rhyme sessions at most of the libraries in Dudley. Get your name on the list ASAP as they are extremely popular. The little ones really enjoy them.

Callistemon21 Sat 05-Aug-23 20:11:27

Try googling baby and toddler music groups in your area.
They are great fun.
Music and dancing.
