Any thoughts on this thorny subject?

i'd rather not, but if it made the difference between me being able to stay at home to care for the GC, rather than see them in a nursery, i'd go for it.

Just read through the previous thread... It does seem to divide people, this problem! Without reference to the original post (deleted before I saw it) I must say that I am happy to help with the DGC when work etc allow, and am planning to take time off to help in the summer with a particular problem, but then mine all live several hours away and it isn't a regular thing. I feel that I did my bit when my own were small, without benefit of nearby family, and am now enjoying being able to go out to work, and am glad the question of regular minding doesn't arise. (If it did, I would hope for expenses at the very least.) As it doesn't. I can enjoy the DGC, either here or in their own homes, as my parents and MIL did ours, and hope that the children can enjoy, as ours did, having grandparents who are fun visitors. I know that that makes us very fortunate and would not criticise anyone else's arrangements, entered into with goodwill on both sides.
