One game if it's rainy is: Take an old hat with a band round and stick a card in the band with a famous persons name on (or just a post-it note on the forehead). The child who is guessing wears the hat and the card is put in and as they can't see the name, by asking questions which the rest can only give YES or NO answers to, they have to guess who they are. These can be e.g. singers, cartoons, toys (e.g. Barbie) historical, scientists, a neighbour who you all know, television and film celebrities/characters etc. depending on their age. I usually prepare the cards beforehand and have some blank for them to write a name for me to play.

We spent many happy hours just rock pooling , crabbing and flying kites when our grandchildren were small. How about a beach treasure hunt or buy a couple of cheap disposable cameras each and let them take pics and then make a collage of the prints.. let them plan a meal , then take them shopping for the ingredients and let them help prepare , cook and serve it.
If the weather is nice just lay in the grass/sand and watch the sky/clouds.

gaga we had a week in Cornwall in July and while the weather was good the GC just wanted to be on the beach and in the water with their belly boards. I wish I was going back. sad

We are going to Cornwall for a week in August with DS, DDiL and 2 DGDs (9 and 7) to a rented house. I am concerned that all children today seem to have to be taken to themed activities and things that we did as a rare treat are everyday occurrences for them.I often think children are over-stimulated.

I would love to spend this special time with my dearly beloveds showing the girls how to have fun and enjoy life doing simpler, non-costly things. I introduced them to "Consequences" at Christmas and they loved it - and we still play it now. I am trying to think of other things we can do together - collecting shells and making pictures, making a garden on a plate and charades have all gone on my list. Cards and dominoes are on it too.

Can anyone suggest other things we could try? The girls do like craft and are both good gymnasts and swimmers - definitely not couch potatoes but they are used to going on expensive outings and I would really like to give them my time - the best gift of all I think, and give them a taste of simpler pastimes.
