Shelf over bed

i think it's not right to impose that risk on a child, however remote it might be.
i also think it unwise for an adult to put anything solid above their own bed, but that's up to them, their own risk.

I asked him and he liked the idea of it above bed!!

Having been hit on the head while asleep by something falling off an overhead shelf, no!. But the odds are very low, so if it's convenient then go for it.
I won't even hang pictures on the wall above my head now, but that's just me being paranoid.

I had a shelf put over my bed in my house. Seemed such a good idea to use that space. It was quite high up, and used as a bookshelf. Problem was it was too high for me to be able to see or get to the books - so really just became a dust trap.
Never caused any problem whatsoever.

If it’s a good solid shelf, I can’t see a problem. We had one over our bed until we moved.
On the other hand, we rarely used it. Is there anywhere lower?

I’m a bit paranoid - I would definitely not have anything over the bed, especially not over the children’s beds, and especially not shelves.....no, no, no...

I never put any shelves or pictures or anything other than soft furnishings (cloth) above the bed. It could come off. In an earthquake things could fall off and do serious harm. I get that some places have more risk of that than others. I wouldn't allow my child to sleep in a bed with something heavy hanging over their heads.

i knew a child whose parents had put a bookshelf at the side of his bed, up on the wall.
one night it gave way and crashed down on him while sleeping.
luckily it did not hit his head, but gave him a great fright.

It would be a big no no from me too for all the aforementioned reasons and just general disquiet.

I wouldn't put a shelf on the wall above the head of the bed.
I'd be bound to bang my head on it when changing the sheets and experienced a DC who used to be a climber when he was young. My nephews and a godson were climbers too.

I hung a very light canvas picture above the bed head in the small bedroom, using special sticky strips designed to hold pictures.
The picture fell off and landed on DGD, luckily it was light and she wasn't hurt, just very startled.

I wouldn’t put anything up over a child’s bed. They might be tempted to swing on it and pull it down on themselves, or if they’re climbers, clamber up.

Oh havent we all bumped heads making beds with shelves above?nI personally wouldn’t put one above his head why not lower down on the side easier to see too

As long as it is installed safely, it shouldn't be a problem.

As long as he doesn’t climb up onto it, he should be fine.

My children all had built in beds with shelving above, we never had any issues with bumped heads!
