Omicron Christmas

Very interesting reading all the replies, and I thank you all ,as a what I believe to be an intelligent individual, I feel so confused by it all, never thought of myself as gullible but I find myself agreeing to opposing views ? my youngest son who is also vulnerable travels around the country as part of his job and has concerns about us being together Christmas Day so has cancelled our get together with him and his new family. I must confess I am relieved to have had the decision made for us, this prompted us to cancel Boxing Day plans with our eldest son and his family, my DiLs parents are going on Christmas Day both with serious health conditions but have decided they don't care, we are all so different aren't we....so thank you again for responding, whatever you're doing, have a Happy safe Christmas and a happy healthy 2022 xx

We went out for a meal last Sunday with 4 out of our 5 children (between us) as we won’t all be together for Xmas.
On the Monday my stepson tested positive (after starting to feel unwell during Sunday night but was fine during the day)
DD1 tested positive on Tuesday (she thinks she must have caught it at a works for Thursday before). My son-in-law tested positive Wednesday.
The rest of us (from the Sunday get together) have been doing LF tests and cancelling social engagements since, in the hope a group of us can get together Boxing Day.
DD2 is 24 weeks pregnant and not had her booster so I am praying she doesn’t succumb to it.
It’s so hard to know what to do at Xmas isn’t it?
I work in a patient facing role in the NHS and we are all feeling very nervous……

Anyone know how soon you are infectious after getting covid.

So does the flow test show positive as soon as you’ve caught covid?

No it doesn't. My DGS tested positive when he did a lateral flow test - DS & DIL tested negative, but they all went for PCR tests, to be on the safe side - and DS came back positive as well.!
DIL managed to avoid it entirely...

Like many on this thread we are cancelling Christmas arrangements. We were going to DDs but her DH has tested positive a few days ago by lateral flow. However his PCR came back as 'inconclusive' but he is not well at all. My DH had his ankle op cancelled earlier this month but rearranged for 31/12 and is in so much pain we're desperate for this to go ahead. However this is looking extremely doubtful. His first operation was cancelled due to staff absence and sickness/isolating. I can't see this situation improving for 31st but we live in hope. It will be the two of us only for Christmas Day and that's fine. We can but hope for a more normal Christmas with all the family next year.

It seems the NHS have been told to change the rules around staff isolating, as so many ops have been cancelled:

There’s 12 of us meeting on Xmas day, at our daughters. All adults will be fully jabbed. So, it’s a case of LFTs on the day, and then, if all ok, having a normal Christmas.

We have been reasonably cautious throughout, as we were both on the shielded list, but we just want to try and live as normally as possible now.

I don’t know how serious this Omicron might be, or not, but we have apparently had it here since the beginning of November, and there are only 10 people (according to today’s news), in hospital with it, and one person who died with or of it.

But, obviously , people will do as they think best for them.

My friend is now isolating for 10 days, poor thing - so it's 'Goodbye Christmas' for her. (Luckily, I haven't seen her for a month.) After what she thought was a cold, and two negative LFTs, she tested again, when it seemed to come back - and worse. A PCR confirmed it.

Her symptoms? No temperature, cough or taste/smell problems at all, just a standard sore throat and runny nose, then she felt better. It returned as sinus congestion and earache. She's fairly sure that it was two weeks incubation between catching it and having symptoms.

All being good, they'll have their celebration in February!

To my mind the scientists should have been more robust in their urgency about the pandemic when it first began at the end of 2019. They should then have duly passed the urgency on to the government who should have closed everything down. Any pandemic takes around 3 years before it dissipates.

My plans remain unchanged - just me and the dogs.

I used to host Christmas for my mum, for my brother and his late wife, and their son. Since Mum died 6 years ago, it's just been me, then me and a dog, now me and two dogs.

I love my Christmas! I'm not at all lonely, I have super family and friends, and covid restrictions don't impact on my Day.
Not being a Total cow, I genuinely feel for people whose plans have been disarrayed by omicron.

Omicron definitely spreading like wildfire in my area- I know so many who are testing positive, Virologist on radio said it could take 3- 10 days for exposure to covid to show up on a lateral flow test if you were positive. So taking one every day not necessarily proof of negativity. . Our Christmas plans were to host 12 from 5 households - so I’m thinking that is not certain. If you tested positive today that would mean you’d be isolating over Christmas.

We’ve cancelled, meeting outside to exchange gifts then leaving
It and will have our family get together soon as it seems safer
My husband is vulnerable and hearing how ill his much younger brother has been with covid we decided not to risk it
We will link up via video, just not worth the risk for a few hours together

For all those who are going to take lateral flow tests before meeting up I'm afraid they are very unreliable. If you meet up you take your chances and that's about it I'm afraid.

Covid is changing our plans almost hourly!

Plan 1 was to gather at DD1s house (West Midlands) which is walking distance of us. DS rang 2 days ago to say he has Covid. Then call tonight to say his partner has Covid. They are in London and have a two year old and a 6/12 month old so we are very concerned. Now DD1 has phoned to say her OH has tested positive! Current plan is to test regularly and possibly go and stay with DD2 in Yorkshire and see the house they moved in to a year ago! Feel a bit helpless as I am due to have surgery in the New Year .

... it's a public health issue for goodness' sake, not a war against the people by the government!

However badly they've managed the crisis, they are still attempting to stop the virus from overwhelming the population and the NHS. They're not asking you to "jump" just for the hell of it. And however badly they manage to convey the messages about the virus - the intention is to inform people, not scare them.

If you're really worried about your rights, you should look more closely at what they intend to do with the judiciary and the election watchdog. Getting jabbed and wearing a mask in crowded places pales into insignificance by comparison.

We’ve already declined large family meals with several families as although we’ve had our boosters we still feel quite vulnerable. We’re happy to meet up family for a walk but not inside thank you.

Freedom to infect others and load the NHS to intolerable levels? I’d hate to think I’d infected someone else - does that make me spineless or just less selfish than some?

I'm hoping for negative covi d test prior to surgery on the 22nd .Have been careful when out .Keep your fingers crossed for me .Hope to see family bank holiday.

Elvis58 I am not sure if you are living in the real world or some cloud cuckoo land where “it could not possibly happen to you.”

There’s a huge difference isn’t there between all the theoretical arguing and the posturing and the reality of someone in the family being so ill. That’s what changes are all about.

Somehow Boris/politics/rights/freedoms etc pale into insignificance when we are up against it.
Common sense and safety for those we love ( and even those we may not be all that bothered about) are the bottom line for me.

Regrettably changed our plans today, so it will be just the two of us again. Am aware that 'just the two of us' is much better than being alone, as many others will be.

So, is it just covid legislation that you’re campaigning against or all of the other human rights that the government are taking away from us?
