Reading the article on here about grandparents names I wonder if anyone else has odd names given by the child that stuck!
My GD spoke early, it was intended I’d be Grandma and her other GM Nanny. But GD decided to call me Munka. I have no idea why or how she came to it! But Munka I am! I like it because it’s her name choice! She knows I’m GM
My other half, not biologically related to her has surname Rabbett and she chose to call him Grampy Rabbit (Peppa Pig to blame there!) he likes that too!
The other GPs are Nanny and Gan Gan!

Lovely to read all the permutations of grandma and grandad we are all called.

My eldest granddaughter called me Nanny Purple when she was about 6yrs old (she is now 20) She cannot give a reason for this but all subsequent grandchildren continued to call me Nanny Purple until my latest grandson one day called me Purple Head and that seems to have stuck.

Nan.

Although, my grandson had a temporary hearing problem, as a toddler, and could never get to call my dad (his great grandad) anything but "Pom".

Don't know why he heard it like that, but the three that followed him, followed suit and he was never known, by my four grandkids), as anything else. ?

Granny & Grandpa. One lot of DGC have the same names for their other grandparents, but differentiate by place of residence (as in Sandringham Granny and Osborne Granny, for example) and have never been mixed up. As with some other posters, we chose our names as they were what we were used to from our own grandparents.

Granny by one DD’s children and Christian name by the others.
My neighbour’s GC also call me granny as they play with mine and just picked it up.

I was horrified when another (French) neighbour introduced his GC to me by using my Christian name, next time I will asked to be called granny, like I was taught to address adults as Aunty when I was small and I turn taught my children. Aunty would be too difficult to pronounce.

When they were small my son’s children called me Nan and my daughter’s children called me Granny. After a week on holiday together they had swapped over what they called me!

One toddler used to call me Franny, one teenager G’ma once or twice.

My own Mamar was from the Potteries, so not too far away, maybe that's where it came from.

GrandmaKT It's well-known around where I live (Nottingham). My own sons called my mum and MIL Mammar roo

I'm Gamm ma by youngest but he is only 3!

Curlywhirly Fri 10-Jun-22 23:14:43

Being half Italian, I'm Nonna, which I love.

BigBertha1 Fri 10-Jun-22 22:43:16

I am Mummy to my dauggter, Mumma to my biological daughter and Nanna to the grandchildren.

Joy241 Fri 10-Jun-22 22:36:24

‘Marmar’ because thr first one couldn’t manage ‘Grandma’ and it stuck. Great grandchildren call me ‘Marmar Marmar’ I think it might becomes a little longwinded if I were to achieve great great grandmother status ?

GrandmaKT Fri 10-Jun-22 21:55:43

We're a Mamar and Grandad too HowVeryDareYou (though I spell it with just the one m in the middle). It's what I called my mum's mum and I wanted to pass the tradition down. However, my NZ grandchildren call their mum "Mama" which sounds very similar in their accents, so over there I'm Grandma.

I am Gran to two, Grandma my other granson.
Gan when they were learning to talk
Other grandmother lives in London and is called Nanny followed by her first name.

I am Gran through choice, given the option by my daughter.
I come from a long. line of Scottish Grans, so to me it would be strange to be called anything other than Gran

However both myself and my 'local to me 'grandsons, have had to get used to others, such as teachers and friends referring to me me Nan or Nanny, which are both common to this area.

Nanny P

Gami. DGD’s choice.

Georgesgran Fri 10-Jun-22 20:36:31

I used to be Gangar, but it’s progressed to Grandma now. One of the Pre-school staff was Eastern European and told DGS1 that (I) his Granny was here for him. I was then Granny in a ridiculous ‘Russian’ accent for a week!

Grammaretto Fri 10-Jun-22 20:25:15

To the youngest pair I'm granny (surname) because their other DGM and I share a first name.
To the older ones I'm granny first name.
My DS1 has started to call me by my first name. Maybe he thinks we are too old for mummy. I answer to most things.

MrsKen33 Fri 10-Jun-22 19:11:34

Granma and Grampa

Liamsnana Fri 10-Jun-22 18:55:54

Normally my 2 and half year old grandson
calls me " nana look or nana can I have"

Patsy70 Fri 10-Jun-22 18:37:34

Nana and Granddad to our six grandchildren, but NanaPat to the children at the local village primary school where I volunteered.

Aveline Fri 10-Jun-22 17:41:52

My DGSs other grandparents are called Gogo and Obie. A sort of Afrikaans/African nomenclature.

grandMattie Fri 10-Jun-22 17:28:26

Grandma, but DH is called “Das” by GS and “granddad” by GDs (different family).
My parents on the other hand were George and Bobbine (a corruption of Pauline) but called simply “Bob” by my children.

halfpint1 Fri 10-Jun-22 17:26:54

The French use Mamie but I felt uncomfortable with that so ended up with Nannie. There are 2 Mamies on the other side anyhow
