Washing

I’m getting fed up with the amount of washing my daughter and her husband generate as it falls to me to do it! I personally wear a top and jeans between 2 and 4 days and socks 2 to 3 days before washing them. They wash everything after one wearing even if it’s clean. it’s costing a lot and is bad for the environment so what can I do about it?

My DH doesn't exude sweat at all. Neither did his DD, and for that reason when stationed in Australia during WW2 he got heat-stroke and nearly died. The chap with him also got heat-stroke and did die. DH's dad didn't even feel hot!

So washing his socks every 3 days is fine. For me, I couldn't bear not to change them daily - and I worked with a lady who perspired so much she used to bring a pair of tights to change into at lunchtime.

I have very dry skin and hair so showering daily isn't good for me, though I do have a thorough basin-wash of face, hands and "naughty bits" daily (hands probably several times a day).

I would do as others have suggested and carefully fold once-worn clothes and pretend it has been washed.

Several websites suggest that outer garments such as trousers can be worn 4-5 times before washing, and few people would wear the same pair daily, so that could mean washing once a fortnight.

We don't have a dog.

Any item touching body - daily.

Socks, underwear, jeans, the shirts under jumpers (not the jumpers), the tights under jeans (not those jeans). Towels, flannels, kitchen items.

Any item touching body - daily

Why?
Do you do particularly strenuous jobs producing copious amounts of perspiration?

Dog walks - four a day. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime.

Don't people who have dogs walk them and sweat?

God, I must be a right dirty cow then! I don't wash stuff half as often as most of you seem to.

Me neither!

No, we're clean, that's why every item of our clothes doesn't need washing every day.

Do you wear your socks 2 to 3 days running like OP? If so thats a bit grim 😳

It was the other way round for us, I asked my old mum to bring her laundry with her when my OH picked her up to come and babysit, we would wash it and dry it and she had all her meals provided. Small price to pay for looking after the kids for us.

I won’t judge how often you wash your clothes Xrgran as that’s not what you asked and anyway, it’s up to you.
I would, as others have, ask why you’re doing their washing, are they incapable?
I often wonder why grown adults have parents doing that, from both parties point of view.

There’s quite a lot of publicity at the moment about the amount of times you can wear something before it needs washing. Maybe you could find some of it and show it to them. I used to housekeep for a family that used to even wash bath towels after one use. Some people are like that.

Allira Thu 20-Mar-25 19:53:01

Socks and knickers - once only.

But why are you doing their washing for them?
If you don't do it they will have to.

Or do you live with them free of charge and this is your contribution?

NotSpaghetti Thu 20-Mar-25 19:05:46

So did I.
Jeans yes... socks no.

Barleyfields Thu 20-Mar-25 19:05:43

I agree. Like underwear, worn once only before washing.

Cossy Thu 20-Mar-25 19:03:43

I'm sorry but wearing socks more than once is a bit of a stretch

I thought this haha

Like everyone else I wonder why you are doing their washing? Perhaps there is sound reason why your DD and SIL need you to wash their clothes for them?

Babs03 Thu 20-Mar-25 18:48:08

Can your daughter and her husband do their own washing??
I assume they must be living with you but they could have their own linen container or bag to put their dirties in and to wash in the machine themselves when they accumulate enough, as well as put out to dry or put in the dryer if you have one, they can also then put it all away when dry.
You should only do your own washing. And who does the cooking? Don't say you do this as well??
They should be living as independently as possible and paying their share of the bills.
Work out a rota if washing is going in together, they can take turns doing it. And have a word about the amount.
I think you just need to put down boundaries, might be tricky but it needs to be done.

SueDonim Thu 20-Mar-25 18:46:35

I missed the bit about the OP doing the washing! That needs to stop right now.

Poppyred Thu 20-Mar-25 18:36:18

When my AC were teenagers everything was put in the wash after one wear. I would fold them nicely and put them at the bottom of the stairs ready to be put away. They were none the wiser…….

ViceVersa Thu 20-Mar-25 18:35:26

Why are you doing their washing in the first place?

Luckygirl3 Thu 20-Mar-25 18:34:42

Um ...... why are you doing it? Presumably if they are married they are adults ......

Astitchintime Thu 20-Mar-25 18:30:03

Sort through it, fold up what doesn't need washing..........and put it a pile for putting away, doubt they'll even notice.
Failing that.......stop doing their laundry

Grandmafrench Thu 20-Mar-25 18:29:05

Surely you should be discussing your objections with her/them? Particularly since you are the one doing the laundry!
