Daughter not allowed to know new baby’s name until she visits him

Some people give 'sharp' answers. Could depend on how they are feeling, in the moment.

Houseseller

You are probably right about the emotional aspect. I didn’t expect the sometimes hostile reactions to my post.
Time to end this before it gets nasty.

This really isn’t a nasty thread at all imo. Just robust and opinions clearly expressed.

Agreed Tuliptree. Not only that the topics sometimes completely go off piste and bear no relation to the original heading which can be really annoying if you are the poster.

Houseseller

Perhaps you would like to explain what you mean by pointless exercise. I asked a simple question which some contributors politely answered.

There is no such thing as a simple question on GN. What did you expect -just a yes or no? You brought in tge emotional context, the being distraught etc etc. Of course you were going to get a range of responses beyond yes it’s a trend or no it’s not a trend .

Houseseller sorry you have had unnecessary comments.

Often the question isn't answered directly here as people often go off on a tangent about a minor detail!

I hope you have seen the baby and like his name.

out of curiosity, was it unusual?

Houseseller

Yes I agree, respect seems to be in short supply these days . Thanks for your comment. I would only say to the people that need to make comments to hurt. There but for the grace of God

What a dramatic response! I dope hope you’re not winding your daughter up even more. You and your daughter need to calm down. Just look forward t being introduced to your grandson and great grandson.

I very recently lost my beloved husband and I regret every silly little niggle we ever had.

What a pointless exercise.

Sounds like a control freak. Not a trend.

No, it is not a new trend

Even it is a trend, your daughter would have still got hurt.

Whats more important, a good relationship, or a name?

I’m really puzzled. Your GD won’t tell her mother the baby’s name but has told other people. Have they also not told your daughter? Has your daughter asked them? Very strange indeed. No not a trend I’ve heard of..

Thank you for your comments Franski. I must admit some of the comments were a bit harsh. Unfortunately the name reveal was only made to visitors.

Dear Houseller. I hope these comments haven't ground you down!! Note to self: don't ask a question that comes from a tender place. It seems that on GN we so often jump from original post to comment without reading your updates. Glad the name is revealed. Enjoy your baby grandson. X

No it’s not a trend.

It’s your granddaughters personal choice.

Houseseller I don't know if it's actually a new trend or not.
I do remember we waited some time/days after they were born for my grandchildren's names to be finally agreed on by both parents!
(They're 9 and 5 now).

Apologies, Houseseller, not Housesitter

No, it’s not a trend Housesitter, based on the varied replies from other grandparents, however, it’s the choice of these particular new parents.

As I posted, I just asked if withholding the baby’s name is the latest trend.
You don’t need to understand how my daughter feels. All the things you pointed out are irrelevant to knowing the child’s name.

I should have put

And before you know it the secret is out

If you see what I mean.

Possibly …..

She going to do a “name reveal” n social media probably with a picture. A “welcome to the world baby x”.

She doesn’t want to tell everyone else before she’s told her Mum.

She knows her Mum just won’t be able to help telling a few other people - in confidence.

That’s no criticism of the OPs daughter. That’s just an observation of delighted grannies worldwide who can’t help talking about their grandchildren 😀

It would not bother me, this time next week she will know.I think it strange behaviour for both mother and daughter. Some people like a drama. However baby and mother ok so all well.

We hadn’t decided on a name for our first born, and it took a couple of weeks after birth to finally decide. In the meantime I think we called the baby beany. Ot thingy, one or the other. I forget now, it was over 50 years ago.
Dont understand why your daughter is upset. Having babies these days is a serious business, birth plans, gender reveal parties, baby showers, naming ceremonies, skin to skin contact, no visiting fir a particular number of weeks to allow family bonding, times change. It was very different for us mums if the 70 s. Had to ask permission for my dh to be oresent. It was agreed, but reluctantly by the sister,

Rather than work herself up over this, why doesn’t your daughter just go sooner to see her daughter and grandson ratter than wait a few days? If she can’t take a day off work, two hours isn’t that far, it could be done there and back after work, assuming she drives?

Oreo

A boy named Sue?😂

It was good enough for Johnny Cash.
