Glad you took the plunge, maryEJB. Welcome! I am Nanny to my 6 GCs, as I thought it sounded slightly less formal than the other options.

I am a lurker too - been reading chats for some time but not posted until today. I am Grandma like my mother and grandmothers before me. When my first Grandchild wa born my DiL asked what we wanted to be called and we opted for Grandma and Grandad as my husband didnt like grandpa for some obscure reason. We now have 6 grandchilden and we have kept th same names - and our childrens in laws ahvew chosen different ones. I love it when the children call me Grandma!

It is a bit circular, really. The forum is as it is because of the posts from the members. Each post is a separate thought from someone. It is not as though the whole thing has been created in one go.

If the men want it to be more men-friendly, they need to post more on it. No-one else can make it more men-friendly, because no-one is excluding them, everyone is just being themselves in their posts.

How can we make Granset more welcome to great granddads like me, everytime I visit the site I feel as if I would am joining in a Ladies afternoon chat?

I am therefore going to be a little controversial and ask is Grandset too close to the establishment when we talk about championing older people issues? I note the nation media nominated Older People champions are really paid professionals who get a very good living doing what they do, but they are not really champions in the meaning of the word. Almost every day I come across fantastic grassroot individuals doing unpaid voluntary work and championing older peoples issues in their local senior forums and elsewhere, why don't we honour their unselfish efforts? To me they are the real older people champions, not the paid professionals, so lets have an award where we can nominate those really true older people champions and give them our well deserved vote.
Finally, on strictly, as anybody noticed how inconsistant Len Goodman is in his scoring, no way did a penguine falling over his left foot deserve the same score as many other excellent dancers who only got six.

Hi Jinglebellsfrocks

I don't know it's something far off or you're due to be one soon. Either way, enjoy and good luck!

Fifteen years ago we became grand parents. In the coming hours and days, I experienced a strengthening feeling of protection - for all three.

Welcome grannyqueenie, you have come to the right place! I look forward to reading your future contributions.

I joined a few weeks ago, I've posted a comment on a couple of threads, but feel I'm still sussing out how it all works! I first became a granny 13 years ago and now have a lovely little brood aged 6-13, lots of fun, bits of heartache and huge relief that it's my kids turn to do it now!

shysal Thu 01-Oct-15 17:26:13

Welcome, Bamm, hope you are enjoying GN.
OlderNW, you have summed up the site perfectly!

OlderNoWiser Thu 01-Oct-15 16:45:48

Hi everybody,

having heard about this website a few times I thought I'd give it a go, as I really would love to exchange ideas, thoughts or the odd laugh (not necessarily all related to grandchildren) with other likeminded people.

Just out of interest - how many of you are located in East Kent, as I have been busy working for a number of years and could do with some new friends / interests / activities. Life should not be all work and no play, I am told :-)

gillybob Thu 01-Oct-15 14:45:56

Lots of new names cropping up lately. A very warm welcome to this mad house Gransnet. I look forward to "meeting" you all soon. smile

I joined a couple of months ago and have son, daughter in law and my only grandchildren in the USA. The other gran asked to be called Mimi, I don't know why, but I am called granny and I really like it. I said they could call me whatever they liked and that is what evolved. I get on very well with my daughter in law, but I only see them all once a year and I find that quite hard. Skype is great for keeping in touch. My husband died last year after a long illness. I am enjoying Gransnet a lot.

Thanks so much for the welcome [smile)

shysal Wed 30-Sept-15 17:37:01

Hello Polly, I love the name! You sound fun-loving, hope you enjoy GN.smile

PollyEster1 Wed 30-Sept-15 12:24:43

Hello everyone!

When I decided to register I needed to choose a screen name. In the days of the old Beeb boards we used our real-life names which resulted in me acquiring a real-life stalkershock, so here I am hiding behind the synthetic fabric of yesteryear and vivid memories of sliding about on a bright red faux-leather banquette in an Indian restaurant wearing my faux silk polyester frock and feeling very sophisticatedsmile

I've a clever, talented, beautiful and fun teenage grandaughter living in America and I hope we can hit the shops together over there at Christmas. I love Christmas in America - all that OTT razzmatazz and a Father Christmas at every corner of the Mall going yo-ho-ho. What's not to like?grin

Polly
