Oh morethan, what an experience for you & OH - not to be repeated.
I'm reminded of a true story about the blowing up of a "solid" farmyard cesspit by a man called "Blaster" Bates - he described the pit as "chuckling" as he threw the dynamite in!!!
Glad you were able to let the fresh air restore normality afterwards & hope you have a less spectacular day tomorrow.

Our local chippy gives us extra large fish because we ask for a very small,portion of chips. Still too many chips for us to eat. Will have to try harder . I've never been to Leeds but we did have a manhole spewing 'stuff' in the front garden of our first house. My Dad came along, asked for a hammer, made a hole in the front wall and we watched the outflow go running down the street. The local water supplier soon responded to the many phone calls, found and dealt with the blockage in the main sewer which had found its way out via our garden. I did wonder what Dad would have done if the blockage had been in our drain . Probably walked away with a look of pure innocence!

Annsixty The best chips I know of are in the Bulls Head in Smallwood, Cheshire. Which is not much help to you living where you do.

When I go out to my knitters group tomorrow I will be having their lovely fresh chips. I dip them in Mayonnaise. I really don't like soggy chips. "Chacun a son gout!" though.

Oh morethan the joys of rural living!!

Remember at school (boarding in Lichfield) I joined guides so that I could escape for a couple of hours.
We used to buy a pack of chips each ( in newspaper) on the way home, then eat them by Minster pool.
We spent the rest of the return journey sucking our fingers to rid them of the smell

By now you'll have all have eaten so I can tell you my news. Our manhole spewed out sewerage all over the patio. It's never happen to us before. It was like some horrible smelly nightmare. Luckily my husband was able to deal with it while I sat in the living room with the curtains drawn. We cheered ourselves up with a long walk in the countryside. A good walk and clean air. The back is still giving me the occasional twinge but not too bad. I've never been to Leeds but I have been to Yorkshire near Halifax. It was fabulous and had the best fish and chips I've ever tasted. My husband still talks about them, less than half the price of southern counties prices. The weather however is another story we certainly score better in that area.

I worked in Leeds for most of my working life, at St. James's hospital. They used to film 'Jimmy's' there but I never managed to get on the tele. I used to enjoy shopping in Harehills where you could buy all sorts of exotic fruit and veg - like yard-long beans and boxes of lovely Indian sweetmeats.

I have never been to Leeds, came to London in 1968 for a year, it has been a long year.

MawB I have fond memories of parts of Leeds - Roundhay Park, city centre, market (mushy peas anyone?), Cross Gates where brother lived for a while - but my memories are from the early 70s & I have never been back.
As you said there were some rather dismal, bleak & grey places - first TP at a school next door to Armley Jail!
Still smile about the place though - I bought my wedding dress there (Leeds shops.. not the Jail!!

Trying to get out of Leeds used to be a nightmare to anyone who didn't live in Leeds. DH had driven all over the world in some fairly hair raising places, but the only place I thought he was beginning to panic was when we were trying to find our way off the ring road after visiting the Royal Armouries. There were road works everywhere and the signage was very confusing to say the least. When we eventually got to somewhere we could stop, he was a gibbering heap. We have never been back since! Going back to fish and chips, I only visited HR's once and didn't know what all the fuss was about. We like the Magpie Cafe in Whitby but I was sad to see that it caught fire today. Gives a whole new meaning to 'frying tonight', I suppose!

Right if we are doing Leeds reminiscences, DD1 bought her first and second houses in Horsforth (Rose avenue??) and DD3 had student flat/house shares in Headingley, first in a rat infested monstrosity behind the library, (but handy for the Box where she worked at weekends) then in one of the "Normans" off Kirkstall Road. I can't remember which, but our friend was Vicar of Leeds at the time and their vicarage was close by. I got to know it well over the 5 or 6 years they spent there between them.
It took me a year or two to find my way OUT of Leeds when I would be driving home alone and once or twice I "overshot" and found myself in some rather bleak and grey back streets. I have just had a look at our Leeds A-Z and see that my route to Headingley has been outlined in highlighter pen. No satnavs in those days!

Well, us lot seem to have much in common. Fish, chips and mushy peas gets a thumbs up every time. Thanks for getting us talking about such calorie-laden nourishment, bags...and here I am with visions of fitting comfortably into the outfit that I'm to wear for our granddaughter's wedding.

thatbags I spent second year of course in digs in a terrace just off Kirkstall Lane - the other side of Headingly cricket ground. Fiance (OH) stayed in a B&B in Chapel Lane on a couple of occasions I recall (when other "arrangements" couldn't be made )

My maternal granparents lived in Headingly. Chapel Lane if I remember rightly.

Yup, not far Soop. Baildon is SW of Guiseley (N of Shipley & both W of Leeds). I was T.training in Headingly.

We queued for ages a few years ago to get into an award winning fish and chip shop/restaurant at Anstruther in Fife. We were quite disappointed once in there, the fish and chips were OK, but not special, and even though we were seated at rather posh tables, the food was served up in a cardboard box, but at extortionate prices. We found much better fish and chips at the Waterfront chippy further along, sitting outside, and much better prices. These days I can`t eat full portions, so when I dined with Soop and MacSporran, it was nice to find that I, along with Soop, was able to have a more ladylike child`s portion.
Soop, those ladies at the care home must really look forward to your weekly visits, I know I would!

I personally find cod tasteless. I do miss white pudding which I loved when I was still living in Scotland around 100 years ago, very much in my youth. Most people, unless Scottish like me will never have heard of it. At this rate I will be having an extra early supper!

PoshG I'm almost certain that the restaurant was in Guisley. Would that be not too far from Baildon?

Charleyg I prefer haddock. bags has indeed got us craving for fish and chips and mushy peas. I can almost smell and taste them. My mouth is watering at the very thought.

Harry Ramsden's !!... now that takes me back ...driving in an open top car one January (!!) from college in Leeds to (the original? ) HR in Guiseley for fish 'n chips 'n scraps!!

maw wonderful and how true. I used to push tablets into a piece of cheddar for our dogs but would often find the tablet on the floor later with no sign of the cheese ! Have a similar problem with my brother at the moment (has dementia) no growling or spitting, just a polite 'no thank you' and then jaw clamped tightly shut.

The other thing was that she had fillet steak every evening on the 14 day cruise.
Her husband was very nice though

That reminds me soop many years ago I and a colleague were on a course at Blackpool and we popped into Harry Ramsden's but it was for a takeaway- delicious.

My local fish and chip shop is also excellent- I usually ask for haddock and a small portion of chips because the haddock is always freshly cooked. Their version of a small portion and mine differs rather a lot. A pity I have tonight's supper sorted because I fancy fish and chips! It is all thatbags fault!
