What is it like to live in Macclesfield?

Hi everyone, I was waiting if anyone lives in Macclesfield or has any experience of living there?
I know I have asked a similar question about other places previously but we have no idea of the area so we are looking into all avenues of information.
Is Macclesfield a friendly town? Is there good public transport into Manchester? Any information would be very much appreciated.

Hello @Foxgloveandroses.

I live in Macclesfield. I wasn't born here but have lived here now for 40 years, so obviously I have been reasonably happy here.

It is not a large town and, like many places now, the high street shops have suffered and there are many gaps. On the whole though it is reasonably well served for amenities. The schools are pretty good and there is still a good library and leisure centre. Once a month there is a very good market called the Treacle Market.

One thing we really like is that we are right on the edge of the Peak District so lots of lovely countryside and walking possibilities are close by.

Is it friendly? It's OK I guess. There are plenty of clubs and societies to meet people.

Manchester is accessible by train, probably 3 to 4 trains an hour. We are on the main West coast line.
If you think of anything else you want to know just ask.

DH was born in Macc in a house that was in his family for five generations. We visited a lot when younger and both our DDs went to secondary school there (different ones) as they were better than our own local ones in nearby Derbyshire. Plus I taught at the local college and worked freelance for several solicitors in the town. We are still in touch with friends there.

Yes, the shops have suffered to some extent, as has the indoor market, but still some independents.

Apart from the town centre, it is surrounded by smaller neighbourhoods each with its own identity, still with lots of pubs and surrounded by countryside. Sadly the football team was relegated a few years ago but is up-and-coming again. The hospital is pretty good too - waiting times in A and E not as long as the others a few miles away. Also a private hospital for those who can afford it.

Lots of history around the town (known for cotton and silk and some magnificent old factory buildings) and a heritage centre. Station is on the main Manchester-London line with branches to other Cheshire towns, and a good road links around too. Also has a crematorium (not that you will care when your time comes!).

Large Tesco and Sainsburys, plus M&S and other popular shops.

Canal runs through the town - pleasant walks along the towpath.

I would be happy to live there.
