Brrrr - What are you doing to keep warm

JessM... you're quite right. When I could ignore the smoke and smells we discovered some lovely places. Looking for fossils (and finding them) in a shallow river bed up one of the lesser known valleys, the Gower coast. And, after all, Madame Patti did build her pavilion there.
Keeping warm, kept the heating on (low) all night last night for the first time. Can't decide whether that is a good move, at least the old boiler didn't have to struggle to get the temp up to something approaching reasonable this morning!

The Oxfordshire school DDs 1 and 2 went to used to do field trips to the Gower Peninsula. I remember DD1 telling me that when she went (age 12), she was the only kid in the group who had ever walked on anything other than a pavement!!!! She'd had plenty of experience as we used to go up to Sutherland and Wester Ross on hill-walking holidays from her babyhood onwards. Those field trips certainly broadened the experience of kids.

Greatnan - I was going to respond to you earlier. But then I got a call from DS1 ! This happens rarely and I have not spoken much to him or GKds since I last visited. Short and sweet but there you go... Most likely to call me when there is some worry to share and no exception.

Anyway - what I was going to say was that it is for strong independent women to let go and cry sometimes. You get used to being the strong one. But you are grieving inside about the estrangement with your DD and her family.
But maybe, that is what friends are for and your friend would understand.
Have you at least told her what is going on?

Bagitha your post made me smile. We took city kids to Dalguise in Perthshire and for many it was the first experience of being out 'in the wild'. On one forest walk one child stumbled over a tree root and was most annoyed with those people who leave big lumps of wood lying around! Another, climbing a tree and encountering sap on the bark, decided that 'they' must have put glue on to stop children falling off.

And yours made me smile, em. I'm taking 15 cubs to Dalguise in March. Some of them have been before. However, we're lucky here to have plenty of runnin' aboot space – boggy woodland, pebbly beach, trees to climb, etc. – on the scout site so they do get plenty of baptisms in mud. The difficulty is 'discouraging' them from going too far! e.g. I had to ask one very skilled little boy to please NOT teach the others how to come down a tree head first!

Did you go to Verdi's icecream parlour? Pinnacle of the Italian/Welsh icecream tradition. Best location ever.

ogm yes I would say that if the boiler is struggling keep it on at about 15 deg. Missed out on a warm front grant did it? Leave the curtains drawn and the doors closed at night. That helps a bit in the morning.

Fortunately my PayPal account seems to have lapsed so I am safe from slipper temptation but I think I can safely forecast the end of the cold snap and a return to milder if not tropical weather - I have just ordered a new pair of sheepskin boots.

That sounds like banging your head against a brick wall so that it feels good when you stop, or starting the day with a tablespoonful of castor oil after which nothing - but nothing- could possibly be as bad

This is along the same lines as having a sauna and then rolling in the snow isn't it johanna. Will stick with wearing multiple layers of clothing I think.
