Bach flower "remedies" no longer licences.

When my GS took his driving test a few years ago he asked me to get something he did not know the name of but that all his friends used when they took their test.

Turned out to be good old Bach Flower Remedies. I was surprised that young men had even heard about it.

When I had an alternative guest house in the 90s, we used to get people coming to stay who were practitioners of all sorts of alternative practices.
We had quite a few who used flower remedies - I noticed when I was cleaning their rooms.
What I always used to notice was how calm they always were. And they could always relate to my autistic grandson, and he to them.

Bach is Welsh for little or small, a name my grandfather called me, he would keep doing so when I reached 5.7 .

The Bach in the remedies is pronounced batch , the Bach in Welsh is pronounced with a soft ch, so no connection

'Alternative' - a weasel term for 'untested and unlikely to work'!

Jess, they are not a panacea for all ills. As for animals , never treated one who suffered from self hate , didn't know animals suffered from self hate. They can be fearful, timid and most certainly suffer grief .

How they work, I don't know, I do know they can help with emotional problems. We are so far removed from nature really

There was a programme on TV once about homeopathy for animals ( not the same as Bach remedies I know). They split a herd of cows with mastitis and gave a homeopathic remedy to one half . This part of the herd recovered quickly.

DD asked me to buy her some Rescue Remedy to keep her calm when she was taking her GCSEs, so I did. She came home after the first day of exams and flung the empty bottle in the bin, saying 'Well that didn't work!'

(I had told her to only put a couple of drops on her tongue, as recommended...)

Well, I'd love to know whether or not the Flower Remedies work and how. I went through a phase of consulting a medical herbalist a few years back - a friend said she could prescribe remedies which would definitely help. I asked for help with my depression/anxiety/distressing thoughts. She was a very nice woman, but what she gave me did no good at all. I blamed myself at the time! I'd have tried anything to feel better so was open to persuasion. I would STILL try (almost) anything within reason, barring trepanning and blood-letting. I suspect I'm a lost cause though.

The only active thing in them is the alcohol. So if you drank pints of them --- but no it would be cheaper to buy a very posh bottle of wine.

Sigh - my guess is that if there was something in them, the NHS would have cottoned onto that before now. Or is that naive on my part? I do have anecdotal evidence of another remedy that really DOES work but the NHS don't seem aware of it. It's not a flower remedy but something I take for cystitis, having tried every home remedy known to woman. That's the only thing I take which is NOT prescribed though.

I took my dog to be treated by a homeopathic vet. She was dying of heart failure and I was under no illusions that he could cure her. Nor did he pretend that he could. What he did was relieve her symptoms so that her last few months were happier and her symptoms were less. She died very peacefully at home, no distress, no need to be put to sleep. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I don't really care. He was an honest man and I would consult him again but much earlier next time.

My daughter's hay fever was cured for a few years by homeopathy when she was in her teens. She stopped taking the remedies, thinking she was cured, and the hay fever returned. I don't believe it was a coincidence.

But we aren't really talking homeopathy here, are we? I don't know enough about that to comment. I do feel quite sure that a very, very tiny bit of a random flower essence in a drop or two of alcohol is not going to have any effect whatsoever.

I seem to recall her mentioning Bach remedies on Twitter. Favourably.

jingle, the remedies are the same as homeopathic remedies but homeopathy can help physical illnesses , the flower remedies are for emotional states

Thanks, Feetlebaum. Put me in my place. Alternative to me meant you did not get bacon or pork sausages for your breakfast, and that I used environmentally friendly cleaning products,etc. It's the alternative to the normal person who does not think about the environment.
Annie, it's impossible to tell how your name is pronounced when it's just written down. I'll stop thinking of you as Anniebatch from now on.

Riverwalk, quite simply because one cannot overdose , they do not build up in the body as drugs do.
