This informative article reports on trials of various supplements and concludes that the most effective are Vitamin D and Zinc - the latter reduces the duration of the common cold.

I have always taken zinc lozenges when I start a cold. The colds have never lasted long until this year, when I could not find any lozenges anywhere.
The idea is to coat the throat in zinc.
Just reminded me to take my vitamin D.

Strepsils always used to have zinc in them [not sure if they still do].

Never thought about Strepsils. I'll have a look.

If I am lucky and I haven't been this winter. If I feel like a cold is about to start I take a couple of zinc tablets and it doesn't develop. This winter has been something else though as I have written in another thread.
