I would certainly contact the hospital to ask if there is an alternative medication that is less aggravating to the other condition your husband has nonu Sometimes different people respond differently to drugs and it takes a bit of trial & error to sort it out.

Aka Fri 14-Mar-14 18:28:32

nannyfran Fri 14-Mar-14 15:40:46

So sorry, Nonu, it's horrible seeing someone you love suffering.I would certainly want another opinion but older people aren't always listened to. I hope he feels better soon.
I was interested in what you said, janerowena, I'm on blood pressure tablets and Alendronic acid for suspected osteoporosis. It's a minefield to get it right sometimes. We want to have faith in our GPs, but it's not always easy. I had an ulcer, years ago, and one GP wanted to put me on Asprin for arthritis!

ffinnochio Fri 14-Mar-14 15:21:47

Really hope he'll be feeling better soon, Nonu.

PRINTMISS Fri 14-Mar-14 14:45:44

OH! Nonu what a state to be in, how on earth did you manage to stay calm? Stomach ulcers are such fussy things, and sometimes the smallest thing seems to set them off. I would do as people here have suggested get back to the hospital, tell them your worries, and blow the GP. I know he cannot over-rule the hospital, but you can.

janerowena Fri 14-Mar-14 14:33:01

I really feel for him, I felt just like that when NSIs caused me ulcers, a hole punched through my stomach and liver problems. Maybe they will poke about inside to see what is going on, but at the very least he needs omeprazole or something.

I know there are tablets that won't work together, my mother has incredibly high blood pressure so she has trouble taking things that will work for her osteoporosis, but I think now is the time to stamp your feet on his behalf.

No chocolate, no red wine, no black pepper or strong spices, nothing very fatty - poor man. And make him sleep propped up on 4 pillows. I think my mother had to try about 4 types of statins before they found one that agreed with her and didn't conflict with anything else, but you have to let them know.

I thought I was having a heart attack the first time it happened to me.

bikergran Fri 14-Mar-14 14:31:29

yes do hope he starts to feel better very soon..he must be in agony poor chap, DH has had ulcers for mnay yrs and takes Lipitor so I presume that is ok for if you happen to have ulcers.

TriciaF Fri 14-Mar-14 14:18:08

Statins work via the liver which can lead to stomach problems. Is he still taking them?
I hope your husband feels better soon, what a worry.

NfkDumpling Fri 14-Mar-14 14:05:15

Oh Nonu how awful. Do ring the hospital, I'm sure there are alternatives to the statin he's on. If he's really bad, don't be afraid to bypass your GP and go to A&E.

glammanana Fri 14-Mar-14 13:28:27

Nonu I can imagine how worried you are,can a statin that is compatable with your hubby's ulcer problem not be prescribed ? I would tend to phone the Hospital and speak to whoever prescribed the statin and explain the problem and ask them to check if there is an alternative and to ask if they would continue using them with your hubby's history.I'm not clued up on statins to be honest but if it where my hubby I too would be worried,so call the hospital and see what they say.

Nonu Fri 14-Mar-14 13:18:14

A few weeks back he was complaining of dizziness, so finally went to Docs, who made an appointment for hospital for tests , went Tuesday gone , put him on treadmill, worked him really hard , than an ECG. gave him tablets , one of which was a statin .
By the next day he was beginning to feel a little rough, but carried on as usual . Last night he was feeling really, really rough , retching, raging headache and chest pains . you can imagine what I was thinking ! phoned the out of hours doctor who vaguely calmed things down . I thought right that's it so this morning I phoned surgery for a home visit , this duely happened and do you know what Doc said that the tablets he had been given had probably set off his ulcer , which started bleeding several years ago and is/was under control , but keep taking the tablets hospital prescribed , well it seems a bit much to me that some drug he is prescribed sets off his stomach . It is terrible to see him like I could absolutely cry my eyes out , but have to be in control as I don"t want to panic him any more !
The only saving grace is that his heart is okay , thank God !
Sorry I have been a bit long winded , but it has been good for me to get it down in black and white
