Joanna Lumley said recently that she was permanently on a diet and restricted her eating to keep herself her 'normal' size.

No cake????? Surely life's too short

My grandfather had cabbage practically every day - grew them to great size on his allotment - and drank the cabbage water with a spoonful of Bovril in it - and dropped dead from a heart attack at 76.
But he was on his way home from work, as a stonemason (no dust masks then), walking uphill with his puffing pipe clamped firmly in it's place between his teeth. So now I know that without the Bovril and cabbage water he'd probably have snuffed it at 56!
(Hate cabbage - I'm doomed)

I think that Joanna Lumley is looking more and more like a horse, so not sure she is a good role model. Thin, certainly.
Cabbage is ok [sort of] though I can't really remember when I last ate any [in the 1970's probably, at a relatives house.]The smell is enough to put anyone off cooking it, like brussels, and if it gives you wind that is another reason for not eating it! What was the question......?

She might have a good point. She hasn't "spread".

My cousin has never forgotten my mother giving her a mug of the water cabbage had been boiled in. Not sure if she has ever had cabbage since !
Of course this was about 55 years ago when cabbage was boiled to within an inch of it's life in lots of water.
Must have done my mother some good though as she is coming up to 101.

And since when has Joanna Lumley ever needed to go on a diet? confused

Agus Sun 27-Apr-14 19:36:16

grin

Agus Sun 27-Apr-14 19:35:33

OK Aka, I have taken note. More cabbage on the menu and how fortunate we like all forms of cabbage

Merlot I remember Joanna Lumley raving about the cabbage soup diet years ago. As much as I like it, having only that every day would put me off for life

GillT57 Sun 27-Apr-14 18:44:20

FlicketyB you will certainly be fit in wind and limb if you eat lots of cabbage........grin

FlicketyB Sun 27-Apr-14 17:42:06

DF, who lived to 92 with no mental deterioration whatsoever and few medical problems until the last three months, never ate cabbage and generally avoided all vegetables throughout his life

Me? I cannot have too much cabbage or any member of the brassica family, or almost any other vegetable come to that. I am 71 this year fit in wind and limb and on no medication

confused

The cabbage soup diet as a good way to lose a bit of weight quickly.

Lona Sun 27-Apr-14 17:37:41

I love the 'pointy cabbage', but it must be slightly crunchy with butter and black pepper.
Now, I'm not over 85 but I can look it on a bad day! wink

Ana Sun 27-Apr-14 17:34:11

You should drink the water it's been boiled in as well, apparently - vitamins C & E.

glammanana Sun 27-Apr-14 17:19:32

^^ should read open missed the "o" out hmm

glammanana Sun 27-Apr-14 17:18:47

Aka my kitchen window is pen at the moment getting rid of ?? yes that's right spring cabbage grin

Aka Sun 27-Apr-14 17:07:45

I know quite a few 'old' folks (over 85s) in fact I'm related to many of them. They are all fit and healthy and have all their wits about them. Old age doesn't seem to have impacted on them too much.

Talking to one of them (92 years old) on the phone today, she suddenly said 'just a minute while I open the back door to get rid of the smell of cabbage'

And that's when I came to me shock they all eat loads of cabbage.

By the bucket full. Almost every day.

I know this isn't a scientific, double-blind study .... but .....hmm
