Coping with the heat

I don't like it. But I'm almost certainly in the minority.
My feet and legs swell up and get puffy and I feel lethargic and achy. And I can't sleep at night. We have a fan going and windows open and I still feel hot and restless.

I like sunshine but I'll be glad to see temperatures dive a few degrees cooler!

Not in one go, NanKate. Although he might have done if he had served himself !

NanKate Sun 27-Jul-14 21:37:51

Yes Rose we have just gone off at a tangent on this thread. Your DH ate ALL the trifle ! tbshock

I had the white wine and thought it was a bit ordinary, but it didn't stop me drinking it. grin

Eating and drinking is obviously some folks' way of coping with the heat, rosequartz! wink

rosequartz Sun 27-Jul-14 20:53:38

Have I got the right thread here? confused

rosequartz Sun 27-Jul-14 20:50:47

DH has managed the trifle on his own, NanKate (not quite finished yet).

We bought two lots, still have the gammon roast for tomorrow, but somehow have managed to drink both bottles of wine hmm

Stansgran I weep for you. All you wanted was as a few simple easy meals.

I agree with Quartz the M and S £10 meals are good value. Last night we had a gammon roast with a nice sauce which I just stuck in the oven, some croquette potatoes, ready prepped veg, a yummy trifle and a nice bottle of wine - all for a tenner, excellent.

Also for quick easy meals Sainsbury's do 3 chicken meals for £10. They are fresh uncooked chicken in 3 different ways. All good.

M&S were doing a meal for two for £10. Should have sent him there.

Perhaps confused would do, Stansgran

DH did the shopping this morning.i said I've no idea what to eat but I don't want to cook. So he brought brisket, pork, beef burgers and a chicken to roast. Have we got a baffled emoticon ? What does he think happens to them before they get to table ? Self immolation? Oh and chips and some ready battered fish which we never have!

rosequartz Fri 25-Jul-14 21:28:40

M&S foodhall nice and cool, Sainsbury was cool, Tesco positively chilly. You can see what a lovely day we had today!
(Back in time for a rest in the shade in the garden)

Spent the whole day bar a few visits inside for coffee, lunch etc in the courtyard of our apartment with the beautiful sound of the water feature tinkling in the background with the paper and then my book. Inside now and feeling the sunshine still on my skin - oh I`m waxing lyrical

The beach in the early morning and evening is a lovely place to be - though. I don't often manage early mornings...

It is hot down here, but not too humid; best to stay still, I think. Which is what I intend to do!

Marmight Fri 25-Jul-14 12:40:51

I am lucky - my house is right by the beach so, even though the sun is shining on the front of the house we have a gentle cool breeze blowing and the back is sunless until the afternoon - just perfick! I am going for a swim this afternoon with a friend off the rocks at the end of the beach away from the 'grockles'; it will be the first dip this year and it being the Forth, will last for about 30 seconds tbshock

Perfect solution today which was to drive to the beach (Normandy coast) and swim for an hour in the sea. I have lost that horrid, sluggish feeling and enjoyed being able to breathe through my nose for a bit.

harrigran Fri 25-Jul-14 12:07:11

I have a very large fan that sits on the floor and blows cool air on to where I am sitting on the computer. I am wearing a very thin cotton dress which flutters in the breeze from the fan ... lovely. Yesterday I decided I was getting cabin fever and went out for a walk, mistake, it sapped every ounce of energy I had.

AlieOxon Fri 25-Jul-14 10:41:45

Just hanging your feet out of bed helps!

Does anyone else find that the heat brings back hot flushes?
It does with me, when I wake up - and when I sit at the computer - and other odd times......how do you deal with this?

seasider Fri 25-Jul-14 06:43:44

.
Once on a very hot holiday in Turkey I was told wearing wet socks would cool me down. It seems to work but you have to hang your feet out of bed!

Our 27 yr old house is quite well insulated which helps keeps the temperature stable. I have had all the blinds shut since early on to keep the sun out.

I did walk to the hairdresser about midday! Mad dogs and Englishwoman style. It was rather hot.

I have lost a strapless bra I thought I had as I wanted to wear it with a strappy top. All I can find is one of the optional straps.

I decided not to go into the loft and look for it until early morning.

sparkygran Thu 24-Jul-14 18:19:37

Hot, hot, hot and today even hotter have my fan going straight into my face as I type and all the windows are open not a breath

MaryXYX Thu 24-Jul-14 16:50:01

I don't have covers on my bed at the moment, and I have windows wide open until something like 9 pm. A through breeze is helpful.

I'm wearing a sleeveless summer dress at the moment, but light tops and short skirts are also in my usual list.

I have a fan running at the moment too.

Purpledaffodil Wed 23-Jul-14 20:25:10

Well sparkygran We have even more in commongrin. Don't know anyone else who does that with a throw! Said on TV that NI was going to have hottest day of the year. Let's hope the night doesn't match!

AlieOxon Wed 23-Jul-14 20:20:39

I can't cope with watering tonight, I will have to do some before it hots up in the morning.......I just feel exhausted and will go to bed soon!

Tegan Wed 23-Jul-14 20:15:16

Can't believe that, given the amount of rain we had the other day, my garden is dryazabone.

rosequartz Wed 23-Jul-14 19:41:30

It's here, Alie, but not enough!

AlieOxon Wed 23-Jul-14 19:18:47

Please, please - some rain!

sparkygran Wed 23-Jul-14 18:32:55

Purpledaffodil that`s exactly what I do. Just collected winter duvet from cleaners today and the weight of it. I find a throw is just right for this time of year and like you I keep it folded at bottom of bed for very cold winter nights. Have to say I do find this heat very wearing I think today is the hottest in N Ireland this year
