I was pretty horrified when my Mum told me about periods and how it would be best not to talk about it if men were present . It felt like a slightly dirty secret.

When my periods did start my Mum said 'you are not my little girl any more'. She never realised how upset I was at these awful words.

I don't know about you, but my mother, sister and I didn't have proper sanitary protection just awful bits of material all cut up which we had to safety pin up to a horrid belt thing.

I was so relieved to go through the Menopause and leave behind all that hoo ha.

It must be so much better for young girls now.

I was 12 and away on a "Colony Holiday" (remember them?) so was with a crowd of girls I didn't know. Some of the girls had been equipped by their mothers before they left and were boasting that they had all the necessary stuff in their cases. I didn't.

So guess who found blood on the loo paper?

The girl in the next bed (Jane) lent me her pink elastic belt and some sanitary towels. My mother washed the belt when I got home and we posted it back to her but I never heard from her again.

I wasn't shocked or bothered about it, although I was terribly vague as to what was going on..

My mother never told me anything, but we (the girl next door and I) had been given a leaflet to read when we were about 10 - I had no idea what it was all about and didn't think it had anything to do with me. No preparation at school at all.
