My neck hurts something rotten, mainly in the later part of the day, and when I move my head, my neck seems to crackle, really hurts. I know the doctor says I have a bit of arthritis in my neck, but would it cause this?

I have a pain in the neck (lol) as well number. Did your doctor suggest physio, or exercises? I was given some exercises years ago, and whenever my neck is particularly problematic, swear I'll do them morning and evening. I do, it settles down a bit, I stop doing them, and off we go again.

I find going to a weekly yoga class is something that keeps me on track and stops my shoulder/neck and upper back from seizing up. Our yoga teacher always talks about crackling, painful necks and backs as we start our warm up - good luck

There's a simple Pilates exercise that I always rely on if I have a neck ache and it works like a charm.

I have neck pain quite often and the noise I hear (?) when I turn my head is quite scary. Looking at an Ipad doesn't help. My GP gave me some exercises which I do when in pain which is to turn your head first to the left then back to the middle then to the right and back to the middle then up and back and down and back (if you get the drift) for a number of times. I have found that this does help after a day or two. Don't stretch too far but just until you feel a gentle pull of the muscles as though you are stretching them gently. If I have trouble sleeping at night I roll up a small towel and wrap it round my neck like a collar to support my neck and I find this helps. Hope you feel better soon numberplease.

Ooh number, I'm so sorry you are going through this pain. I will try out these great tips posted here (thanks GNers). I've found a memory foam pillow helps, and my new neck-support style works even better. I just got it at big box C....o (US) for €14. I hope you get some relief right away! flowers

Doing Pilates regularly has cured my neck problems. Also my husband is disabled with a severe neck and spinal disorder and as part of his rehab he has been given an exercise regime by a neuro physiotherapist which is to a large extent built on Pilates. The physio told me that a lot of their therapy is Pilates based.

Hate to say it but it does sound like osteoarthritis/spondylitis.

Does it hurt to raise your arms above your head, or maybe impossible to do?

Do you get a pain in the back of your head, in the middle near the nape of your neck.?

Do you get numbness in your hands or fingers and they feel like they are swollen but they are not.?

We are all different but at the end of the day 'wear and tear' is a bit of a b-----r and very little can be done to help accept medication.

number I agree with your GP for what it's worth.
I have the same.

I had some physio exercises for neck clicking and restricted movement and I was in agony afterwards! - she was a bit gung-ho though!

POGS, no, not really any of those symptoms, my GP did say a while ago that I had a touch of arthritis in my neck, along with a few other places, but the ache in my neck, and the "clicking", is a fairly recent occurrence.

Good to hear, let's hope you don't develop further complications. smile

I use a small fairly soft pillow roll under my neck in bed without which I wake with cricked neck and a headache. It needs to be just big enough to keep your neck supported. My advice also is to avoid hard high pillows.
