Ebola
(280 Posts)Should we be worried about Ebola? When I first heard about it , it seemed a long way away but now there is a case of someone who was able to travel across 3 countries by international airlines before dying in Nigeria.
As a disease it is 90% fatal and has a long incubation period - up to 21 days. With the increased ease of international and intercontinental travel - is there a real risk of it reaching Europe and the UK?
That also made me smile Soutra - not a ticking off, just pointing out some facts. I don't mind being held to account but I'd rather it was for something that I'd actually done

Everyone on this forum has a perfect right to respond to any post and to suggest that another member should stop responding is assuming a role which is not yours.
If they are getting all het up and bothered, it seems like a sensible suggestion to make - after all, a suggestion is hardly the same as an instruction is it.
Don't include me in your 'us'.
Did I include you in the 'us'? I left that open for those that it applied to - I named no names.
If a member posts an opinion it is for anyone to respond as they see fit. If you don't like that why don't you either find another forum
Seriously LMAO - I can't suggest that someone doesn't respond to my posts that they don't like and you stomp in saying Everyone on this forum has a perfect right to respond to any post and to suggest that another member should stop responding is assuming a role which is not yours but then you say I should find another forum - nothing like a bit of double standards is there ... sorry but that is funny.
will be a happier person.
I am always a happy person - because I don't bog myself down with other people's insecurities or their tantrums.
Wheesht! That's a pretty comprehensive ticking off HollyDaze ! (Safe to take the paperbacks out of the back of our pants now?)

I do think that we reasonably safe here from ebola, because we are able to isolate potential cases from abroad under a strict and safe regime.
If we have concerns (as I am sure we all do) about the people in Africa who do not have such stringent safeguards, donations to help can be made through the Disasters Emergency Committee: www.dec.org.uk
This is pretty pathetic and rather infantile HD, but don't accuse me of not reading what you wrote.
You said 'I suggest you do what others do and cease responding to my posts'.
Everyone on this forum has a perfect right to respond to any post and to suggest that another member should stop responding is assuming a role which is not yours.
You also said 'I think it makes 'us' (my quotes) all a lot happier that way.'
Don't include me in your 'us'. In my view it's an eminently good thing that people on this forum respond to yours and others' posts.
If a member posts an opinion it is for anyone to respond as they see fit. If you don't like that why don't you either find another forum or start a blog where you can censor the comments? That way, only those you agree with you will appear on the web, and you, at least, will be a happier person.
Just to clarify: is anyone saying that the information from the Centre for Disease Control is inaccurate?
Penstemmon
Holly you are fortunate to have found a way not to 'take on the world's worries'.
I am not able to take any credit for that; following a very serious diagnosis where I was worrying myself silly, my consultant told me that it was futile to do that as it would achieve nothing - that if I trusted the medical team (and mostly him) then I had to trust that those in a position to deal effectively with it will do so and not amount of hair pulling or teeth gnashing from me will make an iota of difference. It made sense and I have applied that line of thought ever since.
Like you (and many others), I have over 30 years of week in/week out charity work, voluntary work and donating money.
Ana
Some people have chosen not to respond when I have spoken to them and that's fine - it is their choice.
Thank you for your last sentence.
MiceElf
I can't be bothered to respond all over again but you seem to be another one who doesn't read what was written but took the word of another FM instead - who got it wrong anyway.
What was it you said about not wanting to listen? Does that apply to people who don't want to read things properly as well?
We're not here to make one particular poster or any one else happy!
'We' are not here to make people feel unhappy either: it might not be a bad thing to consider the impact of harsh words on some FMs - not everyone has a thick skin.

Read what I said again (and the others who failed to read what was actually written):
I suggest you do what others do and cease responding to my posts
I did not suggest that you, or anyone else for that matter, to stop posting at all.
From the CDC: 'With the exception of several laboratory contamination cases (one in England and two in Russia), all cases of human illness or death have occurred in Africa; no case has been reported in the United States.' (last review and update August 2014).
So why all this antagonism?
I guess I didn't didn't like your response to my post in the first place - you could have asked for my reasons rather than state how 'gob-smacked' you felt before saying anything else.

Hollydaze if you don't like discussing miserable subjects WTF re you doing on a thread like this? If you are not wanting to worry about people it does seem odd to be hanging around here just picking at other posters. Specially if you don't want people responding to your posts - unless you happen to like the way they respond. hmm
I don't mind discussing miserable subjects, I'm not sure why you would think the opposite. Was I supposed to feel impressed or something by you asking me WTF? The word 'why' not enough?
I'm not picking at others posters - which others posters have I picked at?
I haven't said I don't want other people to respond to posts, I said it was a choice people have and I'm quite happy with it either way. You really should read what has been written before commenting on what you thought had been written.
For the record: we all like people to respond favourably - there have been enough arguments and harsh words said on this forum as proof of what happens when people disagree with some others so it's hardly something that can be laid fairly at my feet is it. At least I was discussing the subject matter in my posts - you seem to have just waded in to attack something I hadn't actually said.
Ooops' Penstemmon not Ana. I'm not checking back again to make sure I've misread the wrong person. I've got a G and T to finish!
Perhaps I should change my name to Nanu that would help.
Galen
just keep taking the pills
And we are different people....aren't we

My poor aged approaching (statically ) senile dementia can't cope!
HELP!
It's not just them though, is it? Certain folk seem determined to pretend claim they can't tell us apart...
Wot? Just 'cos When & Penn can't hold their liquor
I woz 'ere first, Aka! I require that you change your username to something less similar to mine immediately...
(or perhaps when's just had a few G&Ts too many!)
Ana?
I'm half way down a gin and tonic and read that post without even noticing any errors, Ana!
I went back to have a look when you commented. Cheers!
We are on here. Not one too many just fat fingers!!
Or even "man flu"
Pens
I agree totally with your post.
The medical information provided by Jane et alt is accurate to my knowledge.
Everyone is entitled to post any opinions on this forum. As long as they don't break any laws!.
The hygiene regulations and practice in this country are more than adequate to deal with any Ebola or similar viral problem.
However, we don't seem to be able to deal with influenza .
Had one
too many Penn or am I missing something in that last sentence??
