Oh dear i'v just been replying to the post about what's scary about getting older. I said I didn't want to moan about my health and I'm just about to do just that. I noticed yesterday out of the blue that my ankle really hurts. I haven't twisted it. It's no better this morning and my knees hurt and my wrists. My wrists completely collapse if I hold something heavy. More worrying I'm limping and I carnt seem to correct my gait. It's a hot pain that can become excruciating every now and again. The sort that momentarily takes your breath away. I'v had warmish joints for a few years now and just ignored it. I really don't want to go to see my lovely GP so wondered if any of you could throw any light on what's going on. Thanks ( please tell me off if I post too many of this type of post)
Sorry, I missed the bit where you said you'd been...good!
(Galen I had that and it turned out to be caused by a new and stiff clutch pedal in the car - cured by using my heel on the pedal for a while, my diagnosis! Gout test negative....)
Kiora Go and see the doctor you like!
hildajennij you've made my day perhaps I don't look 60+ after all
I never have been asked to pay for prescriptions since turning 60. I mentioned it in the pharmacy one day and was told that they didn't need to ask as my DOB is on the prescription. I knew it was, I did feel foolish.
My BiL has just been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. He is in his late 50's. He was very suprised as there is no family history of it.
Well I did go to see my doctor. I have to have blood tests to see if it's some sort of rheumatoid arthritis. But she also talked me through the fact that it can be a mixture of things. Wear and tear that impacts on soft tissue that can be painful and cause swelling. She explained that you need to keep moving but not put too much pressure on the painful bits. Typically it's not too bad on the day I could go
I picked up my asthma precription while I was there and it couldn't be filled in the surgery. I had to take it to my supermarket. I wasn't even asked if I had to pay for my prescriptions. Up til now i'v managed to fool myself into thinking I didn't look 60+.....obviously wrongly
Have you been yet?
I will change my username to bossyboots
And other one Kiora - get yourself off to the GP.
Let us know when your appointment is, and what the doc says
Once more - go to your GP! "Worse fears are better than horrible imaginings." OK, you've put on weight, but you can deal with that if you have to.
Please, please listen to all your friends here!
or she of course (the GP I mean)!
In my nursing training I was taught that hot painful joints need a medical opinion- it could be a number of things and self medication may be the wrong thing so Yes do go to your GP he'll be glad to see someone with real symptoms he can do something about. Hope it goes well and you get some relief
.
Having similar symptoms Kiaora I have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis and I have an appointment with a musculoskeletal Extended Scope practitioner......whatever that means... Although this is a time of uncertainty I am so pleased I went to see my GP and You do need to see your GP or you will go on wondering and will that help?
Please make an appointment soon.
Dolour tumour and rubor = gout
Do we have to come round in a posse and take you to the doctor's?
Gout has nothing to do with port etc.
No it is not the damp weather. Stop making excuses and get that appointment.
Ooh dear, shouldn't have said anything, however I did suffer from that when I was very young (and never drank port). Whatever it is, the GP is the best one to consult and to give the correct treatment.
Gout oh dear will I have to cut out the port?and drink cherry juice . I thought you'd put my mind at rest. I might go on Friday when my favourite gp is on. Could it not be the sudden damp weather I've heared that can happen when you get older? Ps I don't really drink port..I do put it in gravy though...lovely
I will join in the chorus urging you to go to the doctor asap, Kiora. It could be gout for which there is treatment, it could be something else causing joint pain - for which there will in all probability be treatment.
Don't self-diagnose, you could make things worse if you try to ignore it or self-medicate.
Kiora - don't even think about not going to docs.
I have been self medicating with aspirin over the last few weeks as having seen a lot in the newspapers re avoidance of strokes etc thought it would be a sensible idea ( didn't need to consult my GP as if it was inthe paper had to be right didn't it?) so last couple of weeks have been having very bad abdominal pains which then went through to my back felt like really severe hunger pains/pangs. This would happen a couple of hours after eating but only during the day never caused me to wake during the night. It was painful and as I had my gallbladder taken out a couple of years ago knew it couldn't be that. Finally was nagged into seeing GP by my DH....well she said this morning that I had caused severe aggravation to my stomach lining with the aspirin and it was gastritis for which I have been prescribed some tablets. Was also advised to avoid coca cola , grapefruit, tomatoes and oranges , also told not to drink alcohol to excess. Felt a bit stupid to be honest but more than happy that it is all, it is need to return in a month and note any other instances of pain as possibly could be a peptic ulcer but she thinks it's unlikely. #stupidwhome?
chloe You wouldn't like to tell us a bit more I suppose?
That sounds so interesting. And I like talking health.
Please make an appointment to see your GP I am sure they will not be critical over your weight gain they will help you to feel better. I had to visit this morning as I have suffered the after affects of some rather foolish self medicating I was extremely nervous as I thought my GP would 'tell me off' she was very understanding and helpful the only stupidity I felt was for putting it off for a couple of weeks and putting myself through discomfort that was unnecessary.
You sound as self-effacing as my MiL, who had terrible pain after a tooth extraction, but didn't want to go back because, "It was my own fault, I didn't wrap my face up warm on the way home and it got cold" She was packed off back to the dentist, and he fixed it in minutes.
That is what doctors are for, Kiora, to fix what has gone wrong with your body. How do you know that it is "just wear and tear"? Have you studied for years and seen hundreds - thousands - of patients with the same symptoms? Your GP has, let him do his job.
Make that appointment as soon as you can and save yourself from the pain and discomfort. It won't get better on its own. Don't self-medicate, go and see the expert. He will diagnose what it really is, and get you the right treatment.
(Arnica is for bruises and you say you have not bruised it. )
Get yourself to the doctor, this is more than just wear and tear and needs to be investigated.
Just point out to them that your weight has crept up because your mobility isn't as good as it was and that you need their help to get fitter and better. Don't be intimidated by them; some people bother them all the time about nothing. Heat means damage of some kind [at least, it does with horses
].
I don't want to go to see my GP because what can they do about wear and tear and I'm overweight
I've put on around 2stn so think it's self inflicted really. Oh Iv just remembed I have some arnica gel somewhere. I will just hobble off and try to find it and report back
