Sorry Petallus! - but I am sure you can see the point I am making. The cases on these websites/chat rooms are a drop in the ocean, and the billions for whom it is no problem seldom join those sort of chats.

I am sure that all will be well for you and you will reap the benefits of the surgery. Even though I have had a few extremely unusual problems, I still believe that it is a good operation that brings huge benefits to millions of people, and I am sure that eventually I will be pleased with the result, as will you.

Posters on here come in all shades of political and religious opinion, tastes in food, clothes and TV programmes, willingness to engage in debate or keep schtumm, ability to be tactful or not, just about anything they can differ about, but I can hardly think of any I would expect to tell deliberate lies.

Some like to wind us up from time to time when they are feeling mischievous, and some new "members" suddenly appear with an outrageous post and vanish even faster, but I think very very few are outright liars.

I frequently disagree with what is posted, (not that I always comment to say so) but as to knowing who to trust? I would trust 99.9%, and of those who took the trouble to reply to share their experiences undergoing medical tests with someone who was about to keep an appointment, I don't think I would "mistrust" any.

There are always plenty of people prepared to tell horror stories about medical procedures. I suspect they do so because they think it makes them sound interesting whereas they are really tedious bores with nothing worth talking about. I remember outpatient visits following major surgery and there was a chap telling everyone how the doctor had described his condition as "the worst case in medical history". He began his saga by asking other patients what they had had "done" and, by pure coincidence, he had suffered appallingly with the same thing. When he pestered me, I told him that I had had "a couple of hysterectomies" to which he replied, "I had that. Worst case in medical history".

I hope I did not sound harsh or unsympathetic - but I know this scenario. If I were to google hip replacements and look in the blogs and chat rooms there would be a saga of misery and horror stories - that is the nature of these sites. Stay away from them!!!

Ethel - a momentary bit of sedation for a trivial procedure is not going to give you a chest infection!!!!

I have sympathy with anxiety when facing the unknown as I have been very anxious indeed about my hip replacement and its aftermath - but that is a major operation where they slice through your muscles and saw and drill your bones!! What you are having is barely one up from a flu injection!

You must hie yourself off to your GP, outline your anxieties and leave him/her to sort you out. Your state of mind over this is not normal at all and shows that you need some help with your anxiety state. Don't suffer with no help - that is pointless.

There is little more that GNetters can do - we have all outlined the reality and your anxiety makes it very hard for you to hear what is being said.

Do please seek some help.

I appreciate that you are pouring out your inner fears ethel but, and I do mean this kindly, you need to get a grip. Ask your GP for something to calm yoz down, sedation for the procedure is not the same as an anaesthetic and should pose no risk. If you were having an op it might be different but the people doing it are highly skilled and know what they are doing so please try to stop working yourself up into a state!

Ethel Many Gransnetters have tried to put your mind at rest by telling you of their own experiences and giving you warm and supportive replies. Did you pause and think, before you accused them of "feeding you lies", of what effect that will have on their responses to you in the future? When it is just possible, though everyone hopes it is not going to happen, that you will need more support, and more friends on here?

My test was painless except for a few seconds when the polyp was being removed and that was bearable.

Please, please be assured, Ebags, that you have nothing to fear except fear itself. As I know, the test is painless and will be over before you know it. In the meantime you have all the wise words of those who have had the test to comfort you, and when it is all over you will wonder what all the fuss was about. "Rolling around in pain" - I have never heard such nonsense. As I have said on this thread before, I have had two, both at the time when they gave you no sedation. There was No PAIN AT ALL - even without sedation.

I have never had cause to think that posters on here lie - they all seem to me to be very honest. I am sure that if it were painful, they would find a tactful and kindly way of saying so - but that is not what we are saying!

Please stop looking it up on the net and please stop worrying!

The worst bit was drinking the 'evacuation' stuff - yugh!! As for the rest, it was a doddle; I had a sedative and don't remember a thing until I woke up snoring in a side ward. I was given a cup of tea and a biccie, went home and carried on as per normal. DON'T WORRY

I had this last week , drinking the clear out stuff was ok , I just took my book and the jug to the bathroom , the procedure was fine . DEFINATELY PAINLESS and I am a real wimp !

Ethelbags if you can relax while you have the procedure, there is no reason why you should feel more than a bit of discomfort.

Perhaps it is not fair to talk of people "rolling around in pain" etc. there may be others reading this who have to undergo the same thing. You could be upsetting them. It is obviously rubbish.
