Hips and knees, mainly knees.

I know of so many people in their 70s and 80s who have had replacement hips and knees.

I have spent half my life in a house, and the other half in a bungalow.
I am wondering if my knees in particular could benefit from using steps more?
We have steps outside which I could easily go up and down more.

I suppose what I am asking is, if hips and knees wear out, is it advisable to exercise them more, or not?
[I dont do much exercise. Not sure if that is relevant or not].

I've just been speaking to a physiotherapist friend who used the term 'bungalow legs' which I've never heard before.

I have an uncle who has just turned 97. He was asked if he wanted a stairlift put into his house but he said no because he wanted the daily exercise.

Isn't it frustrating this resting lark?

pompa Thu 15-Jan-15 14:29:30

Yes it is improving, still taking the anti inflammatory and resting.

Mishap Thu 15-Jan-15 13:40:29

How's it going pompa - is that knee settling down?

NfkDumpling Thu 15-Jan-15 13:32:34

Glad it seems to be nothing serious Pompa. Scary though.

Flower - I was told I should put off having a new knee until age 70 so the future looks a lot brighter for your DH! (Actually I'm quite pleased as it got me an appointment with a physiotherapist who says my problem isn't an arthritic knee - it's not bad,he says - it's my fallen arch which is forcing my knee inwards.)

As I said Flowerofthewest his knees are obviously not that bad if he has days when he walks with no pain. I used to dread even getting out of bed or the car as I knew the pain would start straight away.

won't have a medical book in the house, I would find everything wrong with me let alone him. The reason given for the knee replacement thing was that as they only last around 15 years he should be given one at around 80 (suppose they expect him to pop his clogs at 95) It was a new young GP who imparted this helpful information. His knees are not too bad according to our experienced GP and today he was walking with no pain. Good days and bad days.

Good that it does not seem to be anything serious pompa and hope the painkillers will do the trick.

I am still in pain with my hip 4 months after the surgery - seeing physio today (if we can escape from house onto icy drive and hill) and hope she will have some ideas to offer.

pompa Wed 14-Jan-15 10:01:11

Doc, spent quite a while examining me and found the painful spot (ouch), as he said when I yelled "are you sure ?" .
He doesn't think I have done anything serious, given me some stonger ant-inflammatory drug (Naproxen). He expects it to settle down in a few days.
We will see, but I do trust this particular Dr.

I was concerned about taking naproxen with anti-depressants, but he is happy for me to take it for a few weeks.

Flowerofthewest Too young at 75 for a knee replacement ? I have had both of mine done in the last 7 months and I was only 60 in July. Probably just not bad enough yet.

Pompa hope your knee is not serious.

I have an aunt with arthritis and is in constant pain. She walks with a stick. I've noticed lately that she looks sort of lopsided. She has just had a stairlift installed on her rather steep stairs. Should I warn her that it would be best to still tackle the stairs a couple of times a day? I don't want her to make things worse than they already are.

OMG Flower, Hope he never gets hold of a book on medical conditions!
My grandmother lived until she was 97, was never ill in reality but compiled an ever growing list of her 'conditions'. When she started announcing she had prostate cancer we had her sussed!

I will have to tell my DH that he has 'bungalow knees'that will please him greatly as he will have something else to add to the list.

Recovering from cardiac arrest and pneumonia (6 weeks in intensive care)
where he also had ICU Psychosis.

Prostate Cancer - 19 sessions of radiotherapy cleared that one up (fingers crossed)

OA in left knee, steroid jab which helped for a while (he is too young for knee replacement and it is only mediocre according to our GP) he is 75.

Now had pain in right knee. Pain in shoulder (from falling asleep whilst reading every night, chin on chest and leaning over the lamp which he has installed because he can't see properly to read (put your specs on then you silly fool)
The aforementioned lamp is one of two on his bedside table. I feel like I am going into an interrogation chamber each night when I go to bed.

Maybe the bungalow knees will give him something to ponder while he goes up and down our stairs in our non-bungalow accommodation.

Oh pompa let us know how you get on and don't be fobbed off with "if you leave it alone it will get better". My GP said that to me but I insisted on a referral and I had completely broke my anterior cruciate ligament and needed two operations.

Mishap Tue 13-Jan-15 20:55:15

Oh no - I do so hope that it will be alright soon and that this is not a real setback in your excellent progress. Good luck.

pompa Tue 13-Jan-15 20:53:26

My knee has really gone wonky today, it was sore yesterday, this morning it was still sore, later today there was a very loud snapping sound and I was in agony, pain from the knee right into my foot. It has eased a little with pain killers but can't walk without pain. Luckily my Dr has one appointment left in the morning, so will see him then. The joint still seem stable so perhaps it is ligament or tendon based. I jarred the knee last week when I caught my foot on something whilst walking, it became swollen, but with rest & ice, improved quite quickly.
Just hope this is a temporary setback, was getting on so well.

Mishap Wed 07-Jan-15 20:17:48

Fingers crossed!

28th January now.....

Mishap Wed 07-Jan-15 13:59:14

I have long legs and an arm that does not extend due to a broken elbow - so I will just feel happy for your achievements and not want to scratch your eyes out!!! Seriously though, I am glad that things are going well for you.

petallus Wed 07-Jan-15 13:51:55

Mishap I actually managed to get the sock on this morning for the first time from a sitting down position and stretching to my limit.

I suppose I have been lucky. Also I have short legs and have always managed to touch my toes standing with legs straight. Additionally I had the op before the pain got too bad, managing to still do a lot of walking about, thus keeping the muscles relatively strong.

It's a palaver though. I wish I could have a bath!

vegasmags Wed 07-Jan-15 11:48:14

Oh Ariadne I really feel for you. So sorry about this.

Ariadne Wed 07-Jan-15 05:59:31

Thanks, folks! Still a bit sad but not a lot can be done.

jennycockerspaniel Tue 06-Jan-15 23:12:01

Regarding half knees my knee cap is badly arthritic and seen specialist and said he does not do partial knee replacement Recommended physio to strengthen muscles and ligaments I am doing the exercisers and hope to be lost a stone before I see him and think it is easier but no exercise at the moment owing to slippery cottage road and now nasty cold with ashma so I will have to wait to see what he says on 28th

granjura Tue 06-Jan-15 21:14:47

Oh b**** - I am so sorry to hear that.

NfkDumpling Tue 06-Jan-15 18:12:02

Nooooooooo!
