Pneumonia!

DGCs left their bugs behind after Christmas so I was the first to go down with a nasty cold. After two weeks I felt a lot better so things got back to normal. Last Monday I developed a hacking cough but thought it was just a relapse so carried on (like you do). DH nagged me to go to the doc yesterday as I was definitely not firing on all four and I was sent home with a diagnosis of pneumonia, a course of Doxycycline and instructed to REST.

Bummer!! We were supposed to be going to Thoresby Hall on Monday for DH's 7Oth birthday treat which was a present from the kids. sad Warner Leisure were very good about it though and have let us re-book it for the end of Feb. Poor DH. I've mucked up his birthday and now he's having to do the ministering angel bit.

Hey Ho!!

Sorry to hear you are ailing - I had pneumonia a few years ago and was very happy to sit back and rest till it got better. I do hope you will be back on 4 cylinders soon.

Sorry to hear you're ill. Take it easy and plan your time at Thoresby. When we were at Nidd Hall last October other guests kept telling us that Thoresby was the best hotel.

I don't think you can do anything but rest with pneumonia. Just breathing is the most enormous effort. Get well soon.

I had pneumonia a few years ago. I don't normally doze during the day but I was putting my pjs on after lunch every day and going to bed for a sleep. That was unheard of for me but obviously what I needed.

Get well soon.

Plenty of R & R Merlot - I think it's OK to visit GN wink flowers

merlotgran Sat 17-Jan-15 22:14:45

Thanks, everyone. I'm sure I'll be popping in regularly in my pj's. I won't be tempted to get dressed for a while because DH keeps saying things like. You sound better already!!'

He googled Doxycycline and apparently I'm on the right stuff if I have syphillis, malaria, anthrax, gonorrhoea, brucellosis, lymes disease and bubonic plague.

Oh and for some bizarre reason it says I mustn't go out in strong sunlight. At this time of the year?? hmm

Merlot Keep warm as well we now have evidence that being cold is bad for the immune system.

My very best wishes for a speedy recovery. I had bilateral pneumonia 4 years ago and felt as if I'd been kicked by a horse. I don't usually take to my bed, but did so for 3 or 4 days and it still took me a while to feel fully fit again. All the advice about taking it easy and keeping warm is very sensible.

merlotgran Sat 17-Jan-15 22:55:26

The receptionist gave me a funny look when she handed over the tablets, Anya grin

I should have listened to DH and gone earlier in the week but it's difficult to leave a warm bed to go to a drop-in surgery in the village where you have to queue outside in the cold before they open the doors because they only accept the first ten patients.

The only alternative is to try and get an appointment at the main surgery six miles away.....fat chance!!

Hope you're behaving yourself Merlot
Definitely don't do out in that strong Norfolk sunshine while you're on the doxycycline. It will make you go a funny colour.
Get well soon x

get well soon merlot I have had pneumonia twice now although not severe. This summer I asked for a vaccination against it as I didn't like the idea of always needing antibiotics. I hope now if I get bronchitis again it will stop at that.

Liz46 Sun 18-Jan-15 21:44:16

I think that there are different types of pneumonia. I had had the vaccination but still got pneumonia.

I once went to the GP with an awful cough. I had my 2yr old son on my knee in the consulting room. The Doctor sounded my chest and said I had pneumonia, and the only reason he wasn't sending me to hospital was the child on my lap. He prescribed me the strongest antibiotics available and said that if I wasn't feeling better after the weekend I had to go straight to hospital. Fortunately I did feel better.
I think that there are two types of pneumonia, bacterial and viral.
