Vertical fracture of femur

That sounds terrible Brendawymms the poor man , I hope they are taking care of his pain effeciently. I hope they get on with it soonest.,

My BIL is still awaiting surgery on the NHS for his hip. The operation has been cancelled twice and tomorrow it will be one week since his fall. I am disgusted with how he has been treated.
He is just told that there are too many people coming through A and E needing surgery but he needs surgery also. It's because he is 84.

My husband had his neck and spine surgery privately but on discharge was referred to the NHS for physio and occupational therapy at home. The aftercare provided by the NHS has been faultless and has been continuous for the past 4 years. Having the op privately does not preclude NHS aftercare.

My MIL had her knee, femur and hip replaced at the same time. S had previously had both hips done. She does use crutches, although I suspect that is mainly to do with lack of perseverance. She is able to drive. I also agree that there will probably be more physio with the n h s .

At this stage it seems they are looking at the worst scenario. Poor chap though. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

It is too soon to say that he will never drive again. Re a zimmer frame- okay, he may start off with that but It would also be unreasonable to assume that he cannot try crutches and see how he gets on. He may start off non weight bearing and then proceed to partial and hopefully be fully weight bearing but this will take time.

I agree with aggie re physio.

My experience is that you get more Physiotherapy on the NHS , my SILs OH was discharged from a private clinic after hip replacement with no Physio appointment

Driving-wise cars can be adapted for hand controls only, so in due course that may be an option (possibly under Motability?) but that in the future.
I do hope all goes well for him, fingers crossed.

My sister is not very helpful with getting information correct. They have health insurance but she won't use it as the same surgeon will operate anyway but I think the delay etc cannot be helpful. Also I wonder if he will get more physio etc if there is money involved. I'm a cynical I admit. The doctor who admitted him on Wednesday told him today that he will not be able to drive again and needing a zimmer.
I fear that the whole thing will be too much for him and my sister is not the most empathetic person I know.

Oof!! That sounds extremely painful, brendaw. Hope your BiL has a good recovery after his operation but I think it'll take a while. Good wishes for him

That sounds very painful and serious , my guess is they will need to redo the hip-replacement and then use screws/wire to fix the femur together , it might be a longer recovery as the bone will all have to knit together strongly before he can put weight on it. I'm sure someone will explain it all in detail before his surgery.. only time will tell if he can walk/drive again I hope he gets a good outcome.

Ouch! I'm surprised he's been told already that he won't drive again and will need a walking frame....
