Back injections

After many years (5) of being told by the Doctor that DH's back pain was only muscular, and me believing that and giving him little sympathy. He has been referred to a back pain clinic he has been told that he has numerous problems and is now waiting for some sort of procedure that includes pain relieving injections. I am now eating my words and feeling humble.

Has anyone else had that and what was it like and what did it involve?

I haven't personally, but once worked with someone who did and he said it made a fantastic difference! Hope it goes well for DH, whitewave

I had a back injection when I had a slipped disc - it definitely relieved the pain.

Husband has cruralgia - similar to sciatica - and has had 2 cortisone injections in his back. They helped a lot.
The specialist explained that the pain came from arthritis in the spine, boney outgrowths that trap the nerves that run down the leg. So he pinpoints the spot on the spine causing the trouble and injects there.

I've always been of a mind that injections relieve the symptoms but do nothing for the cause.. they were suggested to me once but I turned it down opting to wait for surgery which was very successful.

I'm sure if you are in serious pain anything that brings relief is very welcome indeed I hope your husband has a good outcome.

Thank you everyone only just seen this as been busy all day with elderly mother. Good to hear that they can be successful, as you do wonder. No-one has suggested surgery tan so I guess that is not a option but I think he would go for the least invasive first to see if that works.

I think he is a bit nervous about it so it is good to know.

I was interested to hear you have had surgery on your back Tanith I wonder if it was due to the same symptoms as TriciaF's DH, and if you found it successful? I have the same symptoms as him, diagnosed as spinal stenosis, and am waiting for surgery, cancelled twice! The end of April, beginning of May is my next approximate date. Cant wait to be hopefully pain free.

My surgery was for spinal stenosis L4/5 , started off with several back injuries at work eventually I had a severe bout of ongoing Sciatica and after various treatments including physio, acupuncture and several chiropractic treatments and the offer of pain relieving injections I was referred to Rheumatology who confirmed I had Osteo-Arthritis in my spine and hips not Rheumatoid Arthritis, they then referred me to a surgeon who carried out a surgery on my spine to relieve the pressure on my Sciatic nerve.

It was very successful I haven't had Sciatica in that side since although I will always have to be careful with my back, but I went on to develop multi-joint O/A and had a further surgery to replace my right hip and the left will need doing in the near future.

I hope your surgery doesn't get cancelled again and is a success I did have some physio afterwards which helped restore the muscle strength and tone.

I have radiofrequency denervation done for worn facet joints which are jammed together by a slight misalignment in the lower vertbrae. They do help.

The first go was in 2008 when they just did steroid injections to see if that would work and as it did they went on to fry the nerve endings. This does need repeating as they do regenerate to some extent.

However all back problems are different.

Thanks Tanith I have exactly the same diagnosis as you had L4/5, and have been through the same procedures, it has taken 2 years to get to this stage. Good to know surgery was successful. I do a keep fit/excercise class twice a week where we do muscle core strengthening and stretching excercises, which should help after my 'op.
Good luck with your 2nd hip surgery.

Thanks cazthebookworm I think my surgery was called a Laminectomy (sp) the surgeon said he would scrape out all the arthritic material and make sure the nerve was free in the sheath that protects it, he must of done a good job as I said before. Let us know how it goes..

Yes, that's exactly what I have been told, I will let you know.....
