Feeling old in the mornings.

I'm fairly fit for 68 but for the past two or three months I've felt very stiff and achy in the mornings. It takes me about an hour to limber up. Just another part of the aging process I guess. Anyone else get this?

I do wish GNHQ would be a bit more careful about how they phrase their 'Discussions of the Day' trailers...wink

merlotgran Wed 29-Apr-15 19:00:49

Ana grin Well spotted!!

annsixty Wed 29-Apr-15 19:16:15

Oh dear!!,the first smile of the day for me. grin

annsixty Wed 29-Apr-15 19:18:07

That will probably be misconstrued . Again.

I've just realised the double entendre in the "Stiffness - Get in the morning thread." grin

Tut tut....Granny would NOT be amused!......but this one is.

TriciaF Wed 29-Apr-15 20:10:15

I noticed that too - maybe it was intentional?

loopylou Wed 29-Apr-15 20:20:38

Pompa's influence?

Seriously though, I recently changed the mattress and it's made a huge difference to me backache-wise. I guess I need to get used to being a hobbling wreck first thing since shattering one able/leg and severely spraining the other simultaneously.

I'm ok after about an hour so should really be grateful I don't yet have arthritis in both (which could be unavoidable), or worse.
Magnesium certainly helps, as does a taking a multivitamin containing zinc, plus painkillers if really is unbearable.

Oh, LL I thought we were friends, your opinion of me cuts to the quicksad

loopylou Wed 29-Apr-15 20:44:07

Oh pompa, I'm sorry- You should be flattered smile x

pompa Wed 29-Apr-15 20:49:23

What !!! only one x, I thought that would have been worth at least xxx grin

loopylou Wed 29-Apr-15 20:51:22

Xxx then! grin
You charmer!

rosequartz Wed 29-Apr-15 21:38:06

I am off to swig down some magnesium tablets with gin (does that count?). I will eat some sultanas too if that helps.

I find if I sit down in the afternoon I get very stiff and hobble around for a while afterwards - as well as first thing in the morning.

Someone once said the only answer is to keep moving, but that is very difficult for 24 hours a day grin

rosequartz Wed 29-Apr-15 21:39:03

Sorry, was I interrupting something pompa and loopylou? wink

pompa Wed 29-Apr-15 21:50:43

We were just enjoying a biscuit or biscuitbiscuit

Ana Wed 29-Apr-15 21:59:14

Oh no...

No wonder GNHQ were reluctant to let us have biscuits before hmm

rosequartz Wed 29-Apr-15 21:59:44

Not you as well!

Not part of my 5:2 today anyway sad

pompa Wed 29-Apr-15 22:20:30

Glass of milk and biscuitbiscuit then off to bed.
Now what was this thread about ? Oh yes, getting stiff overnight.
Good night fellow GNers.

most people here are talking about morning stiffness. I do get a bit of it but the worst for me is after exercise. I get most of my exercise by walking the dog and I can easily walk 3 miles but when I get home and sit down I can't get up again. Sometimes I feel crippled and I wonder if I am really doing myself any good or not.

loopylou Thu 30-Apr-15 06:45:06

I think getting mildly dehydrated during exercise and not drinking enough water is one reason - swigging a pint of water afterwards seems to help. It helps to eliminate the lactic acid that builds up in muscles.
Might be worth trying?

Greyduster Thu 30-Apr-15 12:11:54

That makes a lot of sense. I can fish for five or six hours - mostly on my feet - and often don't think about drinking or eating anything unless DH is there and makes me. My thinking is if I don't have a lot to drink, I won't want to pee, and toilets are mostly either non existent or miles away from where I am! Standing up to your twiddly bits in cold water doesn't help either and peeing inside your waders is not a practice to be encouraged! I'll try drinking a pint of water before I get back into the car next time and see if it works (and hope I make it home!).

loopylou Thu 30-Apr-15 14:58:10

If you are dehydrated you won't want a pee as the body's trying to rebalance the fluid levels.
When long distance walking in temps of 25 - 32° last summer I was drinking 2 - 3 litres easily during the walk yet rarely needed to find somewhere behind a bush.
Most days I probably drank 5 - 6 litres water + coffee etc with no problems at all.
Not drinking enough leads to urine infections and headaches too.

I stopped taking all meds, and am still here. grin Yes, my stiff joints(furtive look around for pompa) do still ache early in the mornings when it's cold, I have to make sure that I am warmly dressed all over, including socks, so that it doesn't matter if the bedclothes get stolen. We have also had to go back to heating the bedroom a bit, which I didn't really like but have got used to, and it does help.

Fish oil seems to help, and I do drink lots of fluids. I thought eating more protein should help to repair tissues, and it does seem to have helped, I don't feel worse. I lost some weight too, to decrease pressure on knees, hips, feet etc.

When I get up I wiggle feet and ankles, massage knees, flex muscles. Otherwise I find it hard to get down the stairs. Racing down to open the door to the postman is no longer an option. If my hip is feeling really bad I have to roll out of bed sideways and sort of flip onto my feet from my stomach, with arms braced on the mattress. Not very dignified! I think that when you come off painkillers, as I had to, you learn to live around your inabilities. You can still do things, but differently. I would love to be able to wear heels again, though.

rosequartz Thu 30-Apr-15 19:18:56

If it's hot and you drink as much as 5-6 litres of water a day then you may need to replace tissue salts as well, as all that perspiration replaced by plain water could deprive you of electrolytes.

There was a programme on tv recently presented by Dr Alice Roberts and they discovered that milk is the best fluid for rehydration.

loopylou Thu 30-Apr-15 19:31:41

We made sure we ate plenty of electrolyte replacing foodstuff like bananas, carried electrolyte gels and ate a balanced diet. Over the 10 days we walked 125 miles and climbed the equivalent of Everest. No mean feat IMO, and no blisters either!
Wonderful holiday.
