Varicose vein treatment

Has anyone had varicose veins removed or treated? I've had one on my calf for as long as I can remember and now it is causing me discomfort. I can see it running all the way into my thigh. Unsightly!

Dr Google tells me there are all sorts of options for treatment nowadays.

Someone I know is having one removed sometime in the future; will have to pay to have it done privately even though it is causing discomfort. Will ask her how she's going about it when I see her. I know she asked her GP to recommend a good surgeon.

My DD had very severe ones running down both legs. She had them injected with foam (I think). Was very effective but not cheap as done privately. She was only 30 at the time with 2 very small children and the veins were so bad she couldn't sleep so it seemed a priority to me.

I have one leg where veins are horrible. My understanding is that veins are considered cosmetic and have to be done privately.

Not all veins are considered a cosmetic procedure. My DD was seen by NHS and veins scanned. Don't want to go into detail but one consultant said too risky to proceed and one said and demonstrated that all fine. It is now. Longish procedure and recuperation difficult with 3yr old and a baby but well worth it. She did have very significant problems though

I had some removed about 12 years ago. They weren't bothering me but the GP thought they might ulcerate. The funny thing was I didn't realise till afterwards that all the horrible lumps on my legs would disappear!

Thanks, everyone. I've decided I'm going to speak to the GP and seek advice about it.

Thanks, Tegan. I'd be interested to learn more.
