I'm just recovering from the horrible virus discussed on another thread. I'm a veggie and more or less tee total but could be tempted to a wine of something. I think I need building up.

Vitamin C and Zinc in a combined pill Falconbird. Not as interesting as a glass of wine, but according to my GP "well researched as a positive influence on the immune system". Apologies, I'm like a cracked record repeating this advice smile

Chocolate always makes me feel better.

I have today found that doing what the doctor told me to do in the first place is the winning course of action. hmm (#desperatemeasures). Take no notice of the Internet. Trust your doc.

I don't think there is a pick-me-up as such. Just getting back on proper food will do the trick.

Having said that, I have invested in a three month supply of multi vits and minerals for the over 50s.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 18-Jun-15 13:17:59

No way will wine build you up! shockgrin

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 18-Jun-15 13:19:00

My multi-tabs include the zinc and vit C Iam

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 18-Jun-15 13:21:50

I've got these

I took Bio-Strath Elixir after a really nasty virus infection and I thought it worked well. It is a yeast-based and herb extract and doesn't taste too awful.

I also take a multi- vit and mineral for the over 50s every day - will have to upgrade to the over 70s version next year. sad

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 18-Jun-15 13:53:51

sorry link didn't work

hildajenniJ Thu 18-Jun-15 14:20:45

In the fifties my mother used to dose us children with a tonic called Minadex which was a combination of vitamins and minerals in a sort of orangey flavoured liquid. Every time we were recovering from some virus or childhood illness, out it came. I remember it fondly. Unfortunately it is no longer available, however you can buy something very similar, by Seven Seas, called Minadex. Have a look at it and see what you think falconbird. I sound like an advert, inadvertantly. grin

Does anyone remember Parrish's Food - an iron tonic? My DM used to dose me and my DF up with it regularly, but I don't remember her ever taking it hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 18-Jun-15 14:32:38

I remember Scott's Emulsion. I used to pour it down the back of the bedroom fireplace. Horrible stuff!

soontobe Thu 18-Jun-15 17:28:13

Boots and Tesco sell a tonic.

Iam64 Thu 18-Jun-15 19:19:07

I remember Minadex, I gave it to my daughter in the 70's smile I suspect jingle is right though, a decent diet and enough rest, relaxation and exercise is what we all need.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 18-Jun-15 20:16:18

Apparently as we get older, we don't metabolise our food quite so well so don't always get all the nutrients we need. I think a good multi-vit with minerals is a good insurance. It's the road I'm going down after this lot.

ffinnochio Thu 18-Jun-15 21:11:57

Hope they do the business, J . Get well soon.

rosesarered Thu 18-Jun-15 21:28:55

Having had the same virus, I am having a little of what I fancy( so there!)So far, this has been a little of, trifle, fresh cream eclairs, very cold white wine, and some Toblerone.

durhamjen Thu 18-Jun-15 21:41:03

Jingl, I take a Visionace every day, and the vitamins and minerals are pretty similar to your multitabs, but cheaper if you buy them 3 for 2 at Waitrose.

durhamjen Thu 18-Jun-15 21:42:56

Vampire, did you see that chocolate is again very good for you. They were looking at people who take 100g a day. Even I cannot manage that.

vampirequeen Fri 19-Jun-15 08:08:55

I'd make the effort grin.

Chocolate is an almost perfect food source.

Calcium from the milk....eat it whilst sitting in the sunshine to get the Vit D which helps absorbtion.

Fat for energy, moving vitamins around the body, maintaining cells and skin, brain function.

Sugar gives energy.

Chocolate is a bean. Beans are a vegetable which also provide protein. So part of your 5 a day and helps to repair tissues.

A bar of fruit and nut with a gin and tonic are my favourites. Healthy ingredients and quinine, so no malaria wink

annsixty Fri 19-Jun-15 08:29:06

That is the very best justification for G&T I have heard. Well done Pittcity

Brendawymms Fri 19-Jun-15 09:05:45

Yes I remember Minedex I thought it was revolting.
Do you remember Sanatagen Tonic Wine? My mother used to drink it but I can't say I have seen it for years.

annsixty Fri 19-Jun-15 09:17:37

I would think a holiday in the sun would be the best "pick me up" for most people,if at all possible.

vampirequeen Fri 19-Jun-15 09:17:40

I did think about fruit and nut but imo that contaminates the chocolate grin.

Love the thinking on G&T. After all as we get warmer there will be more mozzies so topping up your quinine levels is a good precaution.

As for gin, well it's made from juniper berries which are one of the wonder foods. It combats infection, renal insufficiency, bad coughs and lung congestion, and can jump start a late period. It also helps with tissue renewal and joint pain. Your skin will thank you for having a swift G&T, as will your digestive system and as it's full of free radicals it will help protect you from cancer.
