I am getting really worried at the thought that it is active!y under consideration, in the form if insurance based provision. I am absolutely convinced that this is not what the UK wants?

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 22:31:43

ok. I see that I needed to have added dying through being admitted at the weekend.

Ana Mon 10-Aug-15 22:26:51

Any ideas, durhamjen? Or is it the government's fault, as usual...?

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 22:26:47

Quite Ana.

Not on. So not on. The medical profession have known for years as far as I can remember.

And yet they still kick against it.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 22:24:56

The care on a weekend is worse than the care on a weekday.

No idea why you want to split hairs. Especially on such a serious matter.

Ana Mon 10-Aug-15 22:24:47

Still not right though, is it? Why should patients admitted at the weekend be disadvantaged just because consultants and senior doctors aren't available?

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 22:24:04

Your 18.33 post, soon.

I think she is wrong about the weekend bit. It may not be anything to do with the consultants. I have no idea.
But when there is a 16% higher chance of dying at the weekend, then something is wrong somewhere.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 22:22:22

It is not about which actual day you die on. Which I assume you know.

It is about the care you do not get when you go into hospital on a weekend.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 22:20:55

Same difference to me.

If you go into hospital on a weekend, you are more likely to die in the next 30 days, 16% more likely, than if you go into hospital on a weekday.

The bad starting point is going in to hospital on a weekend.

Who wants to do that?

And it should get sorted out.

{I assume I have got all that right]

People are more in danger going into hospital on a weekend.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 22:15:36

Between one weekend and thirty days after that weekend, there are lots of weekdays to die on.
So it is not the same difference. Statistically you are more likely to die on a weekday than a weekend even if you go into hospital on a weekend.
There is not a 16% higher chance of dying at the weekend. There is a 16% higher chance of you dying in the next 30 days if you go into hospital at a weekend.

Statistics; annoying, aren't they?

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 21:01:56

eh?

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 20:28:59

So you do not need statistics; you can work it out all by yourself, can you?

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 20:19:16

And since there are fewer ops on the weekend, and fewer patients in hospital at a weekend, of course a weekday you are more likely to die in hospital.
I dont know if they still do, but round our way, they used to try send people home on or by friday.

It is not helpful to patients that diagnostic tools are not so readily available at the weekend either. Plus the other things that are in that link.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 20:12:56

Weekend. 30 days after weekend. Same difference.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 20:11:05

Good grief whitewave.

Here in the south east Kent and Sussex everything seems to be going pear shaped with the A&E departments. There simply is no money.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 19:43:21

You used to tell me that you did not read any of my links, so that's a statistical improvement.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 19:41:52

This explains what it means, soon.
You are not more likely to die at the weekend. You are more likely to die within the next 30 days if you are admitted at the weekend.
You are actually more likely to die on a Wednesday than at the weekend.
That's got you worried, I hope.

Lilygran Mon 10-Aug-15 19:41:24

I don't know about other posters, but round here the hospitals do offer 24/7 services even when all other NHS services are closed. And other services are closed all night and most of the weekend.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 18:33:19

By the way, I hope you realise that I am only likelyto read about 1 in 6 of your links. Nothing against you or your links, but I thought now may be a good time to tell you that.
Though I appreciate you dont send links just for my benefit!!

re the nurses article.
I was surprised to read that she wanted the status quo. I dont. I want better.

I think she is right about GPs.
There have been two threads this week, 1 last week, and crun's from a few weeks ago, about posters' GPs and their surgeries.
And I have seen GPs that literally look a lot worse than their patients.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 17:47:36

When we had the election and the government said it would provide another £8 billion for the NHS, did you think that meant that they would provide more cash in the winter if there was a crisis?

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/no-extra-cash-for-ae-when-winter-strikes-government-confirms-10446900.html

If so, you were wrong.

I am working my way through the second link. It is actually quite interesting. But it takes me time, as I consider it work and not fun.
