vitamins and supplements do you partake and do they make a difference?

I fairly rattle with what I take.

Vitamin E - to thin blood
Tumeric - to help with infections - it got rid of leg pain
VItamin D - supposed to boost immunity - jury out on this one
Vitamin B12 - to treat depletion due to Metformin
Cod liver oil - for joints
multi vit - to hopefully cover anything else

people will say you get all you need from food but I personally don't believe it.

No, he's never practised as a doctor. He studied PPE at Oxford and then studied medicine, because he wanted to be a psychiatrist.

I bought one of his low sugar diet books and it was a total waste of money. I could have written it myself and I've never even studied medicine. It went in the bin. Sorry!

We are getting a little off thread here by just discussing MM but surely many Drs. Have decided that being a GP or working with patients is not for them and have gone down the research route.
If you want a low sugar diet try Dr Johns. Took me quite a while to be able to eat stewed rhubarb without grimacing ?

I've been eating a low sugar diet for 25 years. I just wanted some ideas, but all of the ones I found in that book have been around for years. I have very little faith in any TV doctors or most of the internet sites about nutrition.

I got my tablets from Amazon and direct from the manufacturers-Mycopryl400 made by Biocare. I took 3 capsules 3 times a day. Dr. Mansfield prefers to prescribe Nystatin but my Dr told me I was wasting my time and wouldn't give it to me. I did get hold of some that is used for oral fungal infections but it had sugar in it so no good really.
I also took acidophilus.
Daphnedill- most of the TV doctors are there to provide knowledge in an easy to understand and entertaining way. There will be lots of things that are a bit questionable but lots of food for thought too.

That's up to you, Pamela. Nobody's forcing anybody to buy anything, but I can't take them seriously. As far as I'm concerned, they're on TV because they look good and can talk the talk. If you believe something works for you, I'm not knocking it.

I'm surprised so many of you buy and take supplements. You have a good diet in the Uk and have enough money for fresh fruit and veg.
My calcium is a few points too high and I defintely should not take calcium. no one should unless it has been diagnosed. My potassium levels were too low and now I eat 3 to 4 dates each day and its OK.
Vitamins are old fahioned. Its now known that it is the microbes in the gut which run our lives. To keep them healthy and working you need as many different foods as possible per day and all freshly made and no antibiotics.

Of course in an ideal world we wouldn't need antibiotics but we can try not to eat cheap chickens which are reared on them and have such short lives they have not had time to get them out of their system before they were slaughtered.

I agree with you, MargaretX. If we have a varied diet with plenty of fruit and veg, why would we need to supplement it with pills and potions just because some quack recommends them? The only thing I have as a supplement is Calcium+VitD to counteract the bone-thinning side effect of long-term steroid use and I hope not to need it much longer.

You obviously haven't read the thread then Margaret or Anno hmm as there have been put forward many reasons why even a 'varied' diet might not result in a good intake of vitamins and mineral (don't forget the mineral BTW)

Vitamins are old fashioned (LOL) try going with any Vit C (as an example) and see the effects!!!

Yes, gut bacteria are very important and I think Pamela should be encouraging 'good' bacteria rather than trying to assassinate the 'bad' ones ???

I wonder how many farmers do regular soil tests to find out exactly what minerals have become depleted and treat the soil accordingly?

Thank you Jalima - I am so glad that I take a multi vitamin and mineral tablet every day after reading your thread! I also take Flaxseed oil for omega 3,6 and 9 (recommended to manage my dry eyes)

Farmers do test and add fertilisers to their fields. Sadly most of these are man-made chemicals and when the nutrients in fertilisers are not taken up by plants there is a danger that they will be washed out of the soil by rain water and that the run-off will enter stream and rivers. This process is called leaching and it may cause eutrophication.

In days gone by nature provided natural fertilisers through the decomposition of plants, animal excreta and fields were left fallow which allowed them to recover.

Anya, I am a woman, I can multi task and I can do both!
I did the full on diet as I had a problem that needed fixing, its probably as good as it's going to get and now I simply have a good and varied diet.

Some days I take something, an anti-oxidant and a mineral, calcium and magnesium and occasionally Vitamin D, other days I forget!

However, I do remember when I start to get cramp and magnesium usually stops that.

I have recently been on a course of Vit D after a blood test showed i was lacking. The gp gave me a high dose to take for a couple of months now i take an over the counter version. I have to go back in a few weeks time to have another blood test done to see if level has gone back to normal. I have noticed that the dermatitis that i had on my shin and hands has completely disappeared which is amazing as it was so itchy at times i could have torn the skin off my hands. Apparently VitD is also good for maintaining our muscle strenght, bones, and teeth.
