My dsil uses a neti pot. I've never used it myself.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I have bought someoOlbas oil today but didn't know about nasal strips. I will suggest those to him and failing all else, I will insist he goes to the GP.

My dad used to suffer this, it was polyps and he had to have them removed a few times as they do grow back.

There's a condition called sleep apnoeia where the person actually stops breathing for a few seconds. Could it be that? needs medical diagnosis though, and I can understand your husband's reluctance to go to the Dr about it when he has so many other problems. I'm the same, you get sick of going for tests.
When I had a blocked nose I used salt solution sprayed in the nostril and sniffed up.

I suffer from the same problem and when it gets me down, I use nasal strips - may look a bit funny, but no one sees! And they do seem to help with my breathing by holding the nose more open.
I understand that polyps can come back again even if removed, so am not very keen on that route.

kitty my DD has today recommended olbas oil. I am going to get some tomorrow. He hasn't had a cold for about 30 years so it's not the aftermath of a cold.

I've been suffering from a similar thing for the greater part of this year following a bad cold and several sinus infections. Sometimes it seems to be getting better and then it blocks up again. I have seen three of the GPs in our practice. One gave me a saline spray, the second gave me two weeks of an antibiotic and the third came up with steroid drops. Only the drops did any good and once they were finished the nostril blocked again. They say there isn't a polyp, so goodness knows what's wrong with it. I'm off to Scotland for a few days and have an appointment with a fourth doctor soon after I come back.

Has he tried olbas oil on his pillow?

KatyK Thu 15-Oct-15 21:00:14

Yes Luckygirl I have been looking at causes and wondered about a polyp. Thank you.

If it is just on one side he could well have a polyp up there. My friend had his removed, having had the same symptoms, and he is fine now.

Thank you Maggie I will take a look.

KatyK, firstly I have to say that I have no idea whether this is safe or recommended by our doctors, so I would take advice before trying it. Galen?

But it worked for me when I was getting desperate about a bunged up nose I could not clear.

I will say that I felt quite dizzy when I sat down afterwards, so if I had to do it again, I'd make sure I wasn't on my own.

Has anyone any ideas how to help my poor DH please? Every night when he goes to bed he is woken in the middle of the night with his right nostril feeling blocked. He said it makes him feel as if he can't breathe and he will die sad He thinks this happens if he turns over to his right side in his sleep, it doesn't happen with his left side. It doesn't help if he blows his nose. He is now saying he is tempted to sit up all night as he dreads going to bed. He has asked the pharmacist who has given him various sprays and decongestants which haven't worked. I know he should go to the docs but he is there so often with his prostate cancer, diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol etc he is trying to avoid going. I make him sound like an old crock, but he really isn't. He looks well and is very active. Most of the preparations we have bought ourselves state that they should not be taken or used with some of his medication. Any ideas would be gratefully received.
