Does anyone know anything about Bursitis (Bursa in the hip) I haven't got one but my friend has. Her doctor told her there was not a cure only cortisone injections. She has had 3 of these injections so far and it would seem to be just a temporary fix. Any advice or help I can pass on to her would be useful.

I've had this for a couple of years. I find yoga and walking help . I've just been seen about a steroid jab but it seems to be settling down, not waking me as much so I'm waiting a couple of weeks and won't have the steroid if it's manageable. The physio used acupuncture last year, that helped a bit

I've had this for several years.
Had a steroid injection last October which benefited me for about 4 months. Though I must say it's not just as bad as it was. (fingers crossed)
DP told me at the time that it was a temporary solution.

I had 2 weeks in the sun recently and swam in the warm sea. The hip pain reduced over the holiday and 2 weeks later is only just beginning to wake me at night again.
The joys of turning 39 eh!

I have had bursitis in my hip for some years, but over the last 2 have, fingers x'd, not had much trouble with it. I originally had 2 cortisone injections and was told that I could only have one more - in my whole lifetime - so I am saving it up!! Losing weight and doing more exercise has probably helped, although swimming with the breast stroke leg action (frog) exacerbates the problem.

I have just Googled this, and think I may have it. I just assumed it was early arthritis, although I still have a good range of movement in my hips. It is most painful at night when lying on my side, and after long walks. The intensity comes and goes over the weeks, which I assume is the inflammation flaring up and easing.
Does this sound familiar to any of you sufferers? Also am I doing the right thing to keep exercising the hips however much they hurt? I haven't consulted my GP as it is bearable at the moment.

shysal, yes, I've found it's most painful at night. It hurts most when lying on the inflamed hip but turning onto the other side doesn't solve the problem, it still hurts. Mine also varies over the weeks, sometimes manageable others much less so. I have inflammatory and osteo arthritis and initially, like you, assumed the pain was down to osteo. My GP confirmed it's bursitis because a bone density scan a couple of years ago indicated my hips are ok.
I saw the physio and was given exercises but find yoga and walking keep me moving. The class I go to has women 65 - mid 70's and the teacher is excellent. I find the pain reduces the day after classes and keep telling myself to build daily practice into my day. smile

Thank you for your reply Iam64. It sounds as though bursitis is probably the cause of my symptoms. It is almost a relief, as I was dreading the thought of hip replacement further down the line. As I live alone, I would hate to be a burden on DDs during recovery.
I walk daily and do main-stream exercise classes 4-5 times a week, so shall continue.

I have had bursitis on both hips for some time and it was very painful when lying down on it. I have found its seems to have got a lot better since I increased exercise. I didn't fancy the injections I'm afraid.

After 2 years I accepted the GP recommendation to have the steroid injection on the basis that the pain in my hip was causing problems with my gait, which was causing my knee to swell and be painful. However, as the warmth of the sun and sea seems, 2 weeks later, to still be helping I'm holding back on the steroids (for now)

I've been having some hip/groin pain on and off for a while now but tonight it is especially painful. I have been out earlier on my scooter for a while, so sitting in one position in the cold might be the cause for so much pain and may not be helping. I have ordered some long johns to use on my scooter as my legs do get very cold. (Very sexy eh? The boys are going to be fainting at my feet grin). I have took painkillers and ibuprofen but I am not supposed to take this one but I thought it may help any inflammation. Plus I can't sleep with it like this.

It is in the crease at the top of my leg, in my groin. It sometimes goes down my leg too. It has hurt when I get in and out of the bath or move at times in bed. I'm trying to keep on top of things but it's impossible really and I can't wait for my cleaner to come back and help me. And to see her too. But standing to do any job is not going to happen and I am perching on my chair to try to do something, get some water, warm up some tea, etc. I have constant back pain but this one is a newer pain, aren't I lucky?

Has anyone any tips on how I can manage the pain until I can get fobbed off at the doctors?

Sorry you are in such pain but I do recognise the pattern I am awaiting my second hip-replacement and you describe my symptoms pretty accurately do make your GP aware that it is affecting your daytime activities and your sleep. Have you a had any investigations at all?

Scooter58 Thu 29-Dec-16 08:24:51

RubyLady,I have recurring pain exactly as you describe,my Physio who I see as and when required for my RA,has said it's referred pain from my hip.I sympathise as it's very debilitating at its worst. The same Physio treated my bursitis in my other hip,she recommended acupuncture after trying various other treatments including ultrasound, touch wood that was 3 years ago and no recurrence since.

paddyann Thu 29-Dec-16 09:16:27

rubylady have you tried acti-patch ,,my daughter uses it for pain from fibbromyalgia and has had great results .Its available from the chemist and they do a trial size that lasts for 7 days .Well worth the money. My daughter has the 30 day one on all the time and its about£20

I had a steroid injection in my hip for bursitis about 8 months ago, my doctor said it was probably caused by the trauma when I fell very heavily breaking my wrist. The pain in my hip eased gradually until one morning I woke up realising I'd slept right through. I haven't had a problem since, touch wood wink

rubylady Fri 30-Dec-16 18:17:32

Thank you for all your lovely comments and yes paddyann I will try the acti-patch, it sounds like it could help me out a bit with my pain. I do use the heat pads which stick to clothing and I have just bought some hand warmers similar for when I am on my scooter as I now get cramp from the cold and even with thermal gloves on it still happens.

I will tell my GP about the pain when I see him. I had a blood test for kidney function so need to check that out soon. I have had the steroid injection in the past in my shoulder, so will ask for that if nothing else works.

I'm not moaning about any of this, I'm in a good mood today. Life is what it is and I will get pleasure from what is good out there and who is lovely and kind. There are plenty of great people around. smile

Georgesgran Thu 23-May-24 20:59:22

You should start a new thread Juice1971 as you’ve tagged onto a nine year old one!
Most people don’t read the thread and will just reply or comment on the opening post.

Perhaps physio.

I go before/ after tkr, bursitis, pf, and itb symptoms. Works well.

I slipped on the stairs a few months ago and have had a sore hip ever since ( it was my good hip, too). It’s at it’s worst first thing in the morning and I’ve realised it’s the sideways movement I make when getting out of bed that exacerbates it so I now get out of bed in a different way. In fact I find that most of my aches and pains get worse when I lie in certain positions, especially my knee. On the subject of holidays I always remember having a holiday on Cyprus years ago and saying after a day or so that I felt 10 years younger. And when I had a few sessions with a chiropractor saying that if I could see him every week I’d be like a new person. If only…

NINE YEAR OLD THREAD!!

MayBee70 Thu 23-May-24 22:14:00

I assume that when people have a problem they use the search engine and old threads pop up. I do it myself sometimes as I don’t want to start a new thread when there’s good advice in the old one.

Georgesgran Thu 23-May-24 23:43:45

I agree sometimes Maybee, but the OP’s problem was hip and the new post that resurrected the old thread is about feet. Possibly different treatment/solutions?

Anyway, it doesn’t look as if the foot poster has started a new thread.
