I am struggling with a cold which has now lasted over 3 weeks. My long-suffering (while I have been long-snuffling) DH has kindly made me my favourite chicken and noodle dish which always makes me feel a millions times better. What are your go-to dishes for when you're feeling under the weather? I go completely off alcohol whereas my DH swears by his hot toddies (and some) wink

Thanks Grandmaz for the info on Ribena Winter Spice. Bought some today, after a tiring jaunt to Reading. Found it in our local Waitrose, and yes it's very good, even DH had some and gave it the thumbs up. smile

Fresh squeezed orange juice, a few spoons of glucose powder, hot water & tot of whisky/Marmite on warm buttered toast or soft boiled egg with soldiers (just like Mum used to do).

We looked forward to being poorly! We slept in Mum and Dad's room which had a coal fire burning! We were fed 'saps' made with buttered bread, warm milk and sugar. Extra special was the warm drink of freshly squeezed lemons, still my go to when under the weather!

I remember 'pobs'. Couldn't eat it when young, and the thought of it makes me feel ill now! My 'poorly' food is Horlicks by the mugful and lots of digestive biscuits to dunk.

Thanks for the tip grandmaz, I'll look out for that. It's interesting to see how many of us revert to the comfort food of childhood when we're under the weather. Although I would have hot Ribena if I've got a cold now, what I actually had as a child was a spoonful of my mum's blackcurrant jam mixed in hot water, maybe she actually invented Ribena?grin. I can also remember having something called "saps" which I think involved rich tea biscuits, warm milk and sugar...sounds awful now but I loved it then!

Scrambled egg with cheese or smoked salmon on buttered toast.

Mariamha968 Mon 11-Jan-16 18:28:39

The best way to struggle a cold is drink much water and tea ....a lot...

Iam64 Mon 11-Jan-16 18:22:19

Jalima, my mother made a similar dish, it was known as "pobs ". It was white buttered bread, sugar on top, covered in warm full fat milk. It was only offered when we'd been very poorly - I had it when recovering from scarlet fever and measles, loved it but was refused it when I was better.

Jalima Mon 11-Jan-16 17:53:25

My mother used to make bread and hot milk with sugar on it if we were recovering from an illness, served in a pretty bowl.
I couldn't eat it now!

Comfort food, eg mashed potato with lovely gravy.
Or scrambled eggs on toast.

harrigran Mon 11-Jan-16 17:44:12

Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

SallyWragg Mon 11-Jan-16 15:50:47

My DH swears by a hot toddy too. I always go for a poached egg or something light. My DH can't cook so its always an added incentive to get better soon!

boulding2 Mon 11-Jan-16 15:46:55

I love chicken and garlic soup when I have a cold also a ginger and rum tea with lemon and honey in it, the only thing I keep away from is chocolate for me it seems to increase the mucus production sad

I think Galen and I are sisters.....Heinz tomato soup, toast and lashings of very salty butter for me too!

Skweek1 Mon 11-Jan-16 14:13:46

If I'm feeling up to food it's normally either scrambled eggs, soup or baked beans or spaghetti on toast (pure comfort food!) When I was little, I hated Lucozade except when I had flu when I wolfed it down! - strange girl that I was!!! confused

Daisyanswerdo Mon 11-Jan-16 13:32:04

Toast and Marmite, and a cup of tea with just a dash of milk.

margk Mon 11-Jan-16 13:30:20

Scrambled eggs with chopped baby tomatoes mixed in and a cup of coffee made with all milk (instead of water and milk). Makes me feel better straight away.

Lupatria Mon 11-Jan-16 12:46:49

when i was little my mum would boil some fish when we were under the weather - i think it must have been a plaice fillet. she'd skin it and flake it finely mixed with butter. made us feel better instantly!

if she hadn't been shopping then scrambled eggs were presented in a bowl - no toast though.

i'm not a "soupy" person so when i'm feeling ill it's got to be something i can get quickly - i live alone - so it's probably going to be a sandwich of some description or a bowl of cereal or porridge with golden syrup.

luluaugust Mon 11-Jan-16 12:30:43

Scrambled egg on toast.

westieyaya Mon 11-Jan-16 11:50:36

My poorly food follows in the footsteps of my mother and nan, crab or smoked salmon sandwiches, plus for me it's homemade chicken broth, or hot marmite drink and dry crackers. For a cold it's hot lemon, honey and a nip of whisky (supermarkets own).

JackyB Mon 11-Jan-16 11:45:57

Egg custard, if I'm really ill. Nice and warm - microwave is quickest.

Or semolina or rice pudding, warm, soft and sweet, whatever it is.

Cosafina Mon 11-Jan-16 11:37:23

What my mum called Baby Egg: this was simply a piece of bread and butter cut into squares and then mixed with a chopped up soft boiled egg.

And I know I'm not feeling well when I crave chicken soup, which I'll then have with a roll and butter.

Teacher11 Mon 11-Jan-16 10:19:30

Digestives and Weetabix.

MadMaisie Mon 11-Jan-16 10:03:49

Boiled egg and toast or tomato soup (but it has to be Heinz).

grandmaz Mon 11-Jan-16 09:55:03

Grannyqueenie have you tried the Ribena Winter Spice limited edition> It's fabulous for making you feel better - I'm currently nursing a chest infection and have a big glass beside me right now - has to be hot of course, but it is lovely and very comforting! Have only found it in Sainsburys round here. That apart I tend to want buttered wholemeal toast if I'm poorly - my mum used to give me that as a child if I wasn't well and had to stay in bed!

merlotgran Sun 10-Jan-16 22:39:34

A mug of Bovril with some crusty bread (no butter)
