Success everyone. I used my discreet Shewee whilst away with my GSs. I didn't wake anyone up by creeping along the landing for a nocturnal visit.
There were no spills, no smell and I will definitely take the appliance when I am visiting outdoor performances in the summer where the loos are sometimes a bit suspect.
What a relief this problem is sorted. 
When we stay with DD2 we sleep on a sofa bed in their study which is near the downstairs loo so we don't need to worry about disturbing anyone at night.
The thing that does concern me though is DD's poor eyesight which often causes him to trickle all over the rim/floor. I have wipes at the ready and try and get in there before anyone else but I get annoyed because he doesn't seem to care 
But then I suppose if you've got someone well trained, why would you bother about a puddle on the floor?

Just try to make sure he doesn't catch you emptying it down the loo the next morning, NanKate - or at least have a convincing explanation ready! 
I did read an explanation for the frequent night-time weeing in older people, but I've forgotten what it was...
Just googled and came up with this:
As we get older, our brains produce less antidiuretic hormone. Normally, this hormone travels in the blood and causes the kidneys to make less urine. Since we make less hormone as we get older, we make more urine at night. Sometimes doctors treat this condition with a drug that causes the same effects as antidiuretic hormone.
Age also reduces the holding capacity of our bladder. Even when you don’t have that much fluid in the bladder, it senses that it is full. As a result, the bladder sends urgent signals to your brain that you need to urinate.
We have the same problem nankate but I have persuaded MrA that the best solution will be to extend our bedroom to provide an ensuite, to avoid us having to traipse along the landing during the night.
Result! He has even consulted an architect
We regularly stay with our DS and DinL and the two boys almost 3 and 5.
I am at the stage in life that I visit the loo at least twice a night.
Last time we stayed over I visited the loo at 5.00am and although I thought I was very quiet I woke/or he was already awake the 5 year old who came onto the landing to see who was about. I whispered that I had gone to the loo and was going back to bed. He then returned to his bedroom slamming the door. How he didn't wake up his little brother and parents I don't know.
I have been worried ever since about me waking the family over Xmas with my nocturnal visits.
I looked on Amazon and found a device for women to use, especially on campsites, that allows them to wee standing up either into the ground or a bottle, depending where they are. It is very discreet and does not require clothes to be taken off just the front of trousers to be undone.
I have used the device already and it is great. I can now relieve myself in the bedroom without disturbing anyone, other than DH hearing me wee in a bottle.

It's called a Shewee and we are going to keep it in the car, after Xmas, in case we are stranded on that awful M25.
