washing intimate places

I cant remember if it was on gnet that I read about the correct way to wash the vagina. I read that you must never wash the inner labia only the outer. The inner has its own system of cleaning itself and can be affected by harsh soap/detergent. I had an argument today with a family member about how to wash this area and she washes the inner (bits) on her little girl, I have never believed in washing babies in that area unless they were soiled and only then with a damp tissue, not those scented baby wipes. So my question is, to settle the argument- do we wash the inner labia, women or babies or let it clean itself.

I suppose we can just avoid reading a thread if we consider it distasteful Tigger.

OMG! "Distasteful"?! There's been a lot worse than this on GN in the past. grin

Am I the only one that does under and up with the shower head? smile

Well, not exactly up. Just........ Oh! Never mind!

What can one say?! grin

We all have to do something here!
I have solved some vaginal dryness by - wetting the toilet paper with water! and not drying after. Front first. Works for me and cleans too.

It has crossed my mind though that if old dears like us haven't mastered the art of personal hygiene there is something wrong. This should have been sorted at least teenager stageconfused

There's more than one way to skin a rabbit, as my grandmother used to say.

MaizieD Wed 27-Jan-16 13:59:04

I'm not shocked so much as surprised (perhaps GransNet could find a 'surprised' emoticon).

I don't think it's 'too much information' so much as fascinating to discover peoples' strange attitudes to their bodies!

I have a good wash of both "outer" and "inner" bits every day using soap or shower gel. I dont try to wash inside the vagina itself.

I thought it was the vagina that is "self cleansing", not the labia...thought they needed washing?

Couldn't have a bathroom without a bidet - essential to my mind. Great believer in the 3Fs (face, feet and fanny) at whatever the end of the day doesn't get the bath/shower. And non scented babywipes after a No2.

Didn't nutty Gwennyth Paltrow recommend steamcleaning one's vagina? Ouch.

Bijou Wed 27-Jan-16 15:22:57

I take off the shower head and have a good rinse. I have a portable plastic bidet which fits over the toilet to wash after no 2s.

Penstemmon Wed 27-Jan-16 16:03:57

All medical advice suggests keeping clear of any soaps and that regular daily warm water washing in the general area of vulva/labia is quite sufficient! Certainly no scented soaps/ wash! However I have to say at boarding school we had a bath only twice a week. I left before I started my periods but the only closed cubicles were the baths otherwise the basins were in the dormitories..not sure how the older girls managed sad

I'd say the main thing to ensure is that she washes the child from front to back to avoid contamination , and yes, it should be cleaned

janc Wed 27-Jan-16 16:28:59

I just wash around the area, never intimately I think it would upset the 'balance'

claireseptember Wed 27-Jan-16 16:38:48

Don't see the point of objecting to this topic, just don't bother reading it if you don't like it. What we choose to disclose or not is entirely up to us and it's lovely that this forum is here for people to be able to make those choices.
I was about to say that on the subject of my own personal hygiene my lips are sealed, but maybe that has unfortunate connotations.....

grin

tigger Wed 27-Jan-16 19:15:40

I suppose I could Grannywise but I thought I had the same rights as everyone else to express an opinion, infact I am amazed so many made a contribution.

tigger Wed 27-Jan-16 19:17:34

Not in living memory jinglebellfrocks but you speak for yourself as you usually do.

janeainsworth Wed 27-Jan-16 19:22:33

Gosh Pen 2 baths a weekshock
You were luckygrin
We had one a week at home and no shower either.
Just a quick wipe with a flannel now and then and guess what? No one died, smelled or had anything nasty down there.

Jalima Wed 27-Jan-16 19:22:37

Am I the only one that does under and up with the shower head? - sounds like a rugby tackle, the mind boggles

No, you're not, can't bear the thought of any soap or shower gel left lingering anywhere that may have dripped down, smile and it sounds as if another poster does too - Bijou? was it you?

Stansgran Wed 27-Jan-16 19:37:23

No one has mentioned steam cleaning....wasn't it Gwyneth Paltrow who took things to extremes IMO?

Jalima Wed 27-Jan-16 19:38:03

My neighbour has a steam cleaner, I was going to borrow it to do the carpet, hmm thinks .....

Florentine Wed 27-Jan-16 20:36:40

In Italy we use bidets, which are invaluable, as we can use them after going to the toilet. I have had bidets installed in our bathrooms, as I find it difficult to do without. Even just splashing with water (and you can get special detergents for intimate areas) is sufficient to refresh.

Ana Wed 27-Jan-16 20:40:07

jainainsworth - same here! grin
