Sleeping too much !

Recently I just seem to fall asleep for long periods in the day ie today from 3-6pm , I sleep reasonably well most nights and set the clock for 7.30am even if I don`t need to be up . I am 64 and do have some health problems of long standing ie cervical and lumber spondylosis ( 30 years) muscle weakness and neuropathy which is painful and I was prescribed strong painkillers for those things 10+years ago.
The falling asleep problems have become more marked over the last few months so I know it cannot be due to the medication . I also take an antidepressant Sertraline and have been taking that for 5 years . I asked my Gp if I could up the dose a couple of months ago as I felt low and it did help . I wonder if this could be depression and the tablets are not working as well as I think they are ! Does anyone have similar problems or could offer any advice ? I know I should go back to the Gp but would like to try to avoid if I can .

Could it be that you have nothing planned for this period of time, you get comfy, and just fall asleep? Try to do something round about 3 , shop, visit a friend or have somebody visit you, go for a walk, potter in the garden, fresh air may help?

Could it partly be the colder weather? Lately I've been dropping off if I sit in a comfy chair after lunch and, if I've been out, in the late afternoon. Most irritating is that I find I drop off while watching tv programmes I really want to see. I think it's because I relax. How silly!

Your medication could be a factor, as could mine. I'll be interested to see what any people with pharmaceutical experience think.

Have you ever had your thyroid checked? When I had this sleeping problem, about 20 years ago, I almost dropped off on the M6 and only just avoided the wheels of a juggernaut that was passing me. That was, if you'll excuse the expression, a wake-up call. I had a blood test which revealed hypothyroidism and I have been on thyroxin ever since - currently 100mcg.

It could possibly be that you need vit D.

I totally agree with roses ! I have a very busy life. I work full time and look after my grandchildren and my parents. However if ( on a Saturday or Sunday) I happen to sit down, I would fall asleep (as I am usually exhausted) my best advice would be to find something to do that doesn't involve sitting in the armchair. Bake a cake, go for a walk, tidy a cupboard..... Anything. The other thing f77ms is why are you getting up so soon? If I wasn't at work ( oh I wish) I wouldn't get up so soon and would take my time. Waking at 8(ish) having a relaxing cuppa in bed and then finally "getting up" at 9-9.30 . Heaven x

Thanks for all your replies !
I will try the suggestions ie finding something to do mid afternoon .
I have had a few changes in my life over the last year , two of my very good friends have moved away , I looked after my Mum, who lived with me , she died last year. My own health has not been great . A few problems with adult children in the mix ! I am divorced so no husband to look after lol .

I recognised that I needed to do something so started to volunteer a few months ago and work for a charity twice a week . I really enjoy it but find I am exhausted when I get home , which doesn`t seem right .

Gillybob , I find I feel a bit grotty if I lie in hence setting the clock . It was different when I was working, having a lie in was a real treat .

How long has the falling asleep from eg 3-6pm been going on for?
It doesnt sound like depression to me.

Go and ask your GP. That is what they are for.

Did the extra sleeping coincide with the increased dose of Sertraline?

f77ms Sun 31-Jan-16 15:45:40

Lona , No , I asked for the extra sertraline partly because of the falling asleep and also I felt low .
Obieone (great name!) I have noticed it over the last few months . I just wondered about depression because of all the changes in my life over the last year , mostly negative ones .
Elegran , I agree and possibly will end up going unless I can sort it myself .
Thanks everyone for your replies x
